@Thomas – No kudos to the NRA, they see that this time some sort of action will be taken so they want the ATF to regulate bump stocks rather than congress opening Pandora’s box.
^^Nope. Nobody — or at least the vast majority — of people wanting real gun control want to ban guns, nor to abolish the 2nd amendment. This is just another lie by Trump Disciples to prevent any rational gun control discussion.
And the NRA’s money, while not on the scale of Kochs, et al, is still significant. And its real value to Republicans is that the NRA can help to reelect them by providing a barrage of attack ads against their opponents along with right wing talk radio and the rest of the right wing network.
Is JLOCKE promoting a distortion? Yes, most progressives, liberals, and conservatives are not for banning all guns. How about looking how other developed countries deal with the “gun issue.”
JLOCKE, exactly how is this a “rational gun control discussion”? Lester is so pro-gun that he claims anyone wanting ANY gun control is trying to repeal the second amendment (yesterday’s toon). In today’s toon says that gun regulations equate to legislation on morality, SELF-discipline and character. Gun regulations are reasonable, the things Lester lists are personal (note the use of SELF).
SCRATCHY, most laws restricting abortion are unconstitutional based on Roe v Wade (and Trump’s actions to stop birth control mandate will INCREASE abortions). Voter ID laws are intended to limit minority vote – many Repubs even admitted this. Voter fraud is VERY limited and most is by absentee voters or election officials – which voter ID does NOTHING to prevent. Legislating responsibility – child support laws, woman was just jailed for refusing to vaccinate child. Morality and ethics are are governed by laws where applicable – exactly what morals and ethics are you referring to? Leftists WANT regulations because we do not trust corporations to harm us but the rightists want regulations removed. It is moral and ethical to protect people from harm (cigarettes, reducing pollution, stopping companies from dumping toxic waster, CFPB).
Does Mike Lester understand the meaning of the word “mandatory”. It means that something must be “enforced”, not simply “voluntary”. “Mandatory self-discipline” is an oxymoron.
Meanwhile, I suspect that his idea of “character” is quite different from mine, so if it were mandatory for me to display “character” — as I understand it, — he would still be dissatisfied.

So your solution, Mr. Lester, is to have everyone to just behave themselves? Why didn’t anyone think of that before?

We’ve tried that and it doesn’t work.

I especially like Lester’s advocacy of “mandated morality”.
Because freedom.

Yes the left hates it when people have morals and behave themselves. That pretty much leaves out all their voters.

Lester is right; all we have to do is ask Paddock to develop some morality, self discipline, and character. There, problem of mass shootings solved.

BTW, who gets to mandate the morality?
The pussy grabber?

Why have laws against murder or theft? Let’s just make everyone be good and then we won’t have to have any laws at all.
