I don’t have a mobile phone right now. Why bother? Everyone around me has one, in case there’s an emergency. They hold the things close to their eyes, and I think, Someday I’ll go outside and the world will be strangely quiet, no traffic or pedestrians. Just young children and babies crying within the houses. Cars along the road will have drivers and passengers slumped in their seats with their cell phones attached to their faces, throbbing like Alien face huggers. People in stores will stand immobile while their phones download their old thoughts and reprogram them with acceptable new ones. A Hive Mentality will take over the world, and Unreality will rule. Some would rejoice in that elegant hope. (—
What I find both scary, and sad is going to a mall with an Apple Store on the day some “New and Improved” version of some electronic gizmo is released, like “The NEW iPhone 8.2/5, NOW with a 1/8 inch larger screen and available in 3 more colors” and seeing a line of HUNDREDS of gullible Techno Nerds waiting for hours to get it, when their old phone works PERFECTLY WELL!
I am so very glad for your comic today, Brian! It fits my sentiments exactly! I do not use the fingerprint ID feature on my iPhone (5SE) and will not be going to upgrade to X anytime at all as long as that is the way to unlock the phone (the damn $1000 price tag is outrageous to me, too, BTW). I am hopeful and anticipating that other companies will still be marketing less intrusive and cheaper smart phones when my 5SE no longer functions (fingers crossed… maybe it will last four years)?
I completely lost any loyalty to Apple when they came out with the Apple III computer (which quickly failed) and didn’t make it backward compatible with the Apple II. One of our students’ fathers donated an Apple III to our math department. It made a lovely doorstop.

I am SO GLAD I have an old flip phone with NO apps, NO large screen, and NO long-term contract!

If my animated “cute emoji character” looked as scary as his teddy bear, I’ll opt out, thank you.
