Some politicians hate people that measure things and keep records that point out trends that could be harmful to the environment, as they want to avoid the hard work of solving problems and instead focus on gimmicks to gain reelection. The majority of Americans are smart enough to heed the advice on environmental threats, but apparently, not smart enough to elect leaders that will work on solutions.

About 90 percent of the world’s fishing grounds are being harvested at or beyond their sustainable limits. Some varieties, such as the southern bluefin tuna, are threatened with extinction. Shrinking supplies off the central and western coast of Africa have raised concerns about future food shortages there. In the Mediterranean and Black seas, catches have fallen by a third since 2007. Fishing rights have been a source of friction in the South China Sea, where China and Southeast Asian nations have overlapping territorial claims. Indonesia has taken to blowing up foreign trawlers it’s seized for fishing illegally in its waters. And fishing could prove to be a flashpoint in the U.K.’s talks to leave the European Union, as British boats aim to cut competition from foreign fleets and unwind quotas that limited catches.
Once the technology of ocean dredging came about any single or set of trawlers could score the bottom of the sea literally tearing up the ocean bottom to get very little from it and destroying the ocean bottoms for hundreds of square miles. Humans are the only species that can change the Earth and we have. And will do more destruction to come.
So humans are destroying the echo system and affecting the planet? Republicans do not believe that you can fish so much that you take all the animals out of the ocean. They think humans can not affect their surroundings.
Trump is playing footloose with the facts even more than usual. He noted last night that the US became an energy exporter “just recently,” since that sounds better than “under Obama.”
Every few years in New England the fisherman get a burr across their backsides when the fishing stocks get too low and new fishing limits are proposed. Pretty sad because eventually they will be too overfished.
The state of Alaska does a pretty decent job of managing their fisheries quite rigorously. It is not difficult – problem is demand and increasing population.
I had the same discussion with a ‘visionary’ touting the fantastic advantages of an America where everybody had electric cars – I pointed out that America did NOT have the infrastructure to support that type of electrical usage! His reply was a variation on “Build it and they will come!” He had a starting point – “A” and an end point, “Z” and ABSOLUTELY no clue of how to get from one point to the other, saying that we would work it out as it was needed – so, basically, the fish will be ‘found’ as needed! Ignorance and stupidity make things look and sound so simple! That’s why Donnie has such a enthusiastic following!
