This week, along with everything else, an email went out to conservative journalists from Trump’s personal lawyer, John Dowd, listing reasons arguing that “there literally is no difference between” Robert E. Lee and George Washington. Among the completely objective historically-based specific facts that the email points out: “Both rebelled against the ruling government,” “both saved America,” and “both were great men.” Wow! I can’t tell them apart!

With all the Lee/Washington talk this week – it’s surprising to me that I haven’t heard anyone bring up their actual familial connection. Robert E. Lee married Mary Anna Custis Lee, who was the daughter of George Washington Parke Custis, GW’s adopted son. I’m sure his grandfather-in-law would have been proud…

This is a great cartoon — more properly, “editorial art.” And the answer is, The Civil War never completely ended; the embers are again flaring up. Indeed, the Uncivil War is now in full battle mode.

And there ARE a lot of people who do not know that Lincoln DID offer Lee Command of the Union Armies. I did remember reading about that fact way back in 5th or 6th grade. Another little known fact is a different “Contribution” his family made to American History. It’s called “Arlington National Cemetery”. The national cemetery was established during the Civil War on the grounds of Arlington House, which had been the estate of the family of Confederate general Robert E. Lee’s wife Mary Anna (Custis) Lee (a great-granddaughter of Martha Washington).

The whole problem revolves around the fact that Bob felt a closer kinship to his state (Virginia) than to his country (America). Most Republicans can more easily ‘identify’ with THAT mindset than they can with Grant’s loyalty to his country. That is the reason that “tribalism” is much more prevalent amongst Republicans and at least partially explains WHY they are still so loath to renounce a ‘leader’ that has proved himself to be a pathological, liar, a narcissistic self-admitted serial sex offender and now he has once again professed a desire to support bigoted, racist ‘white-supremacist’ dogma! Donnie probably has his father’s ‘sheet’ and ‘hood’ still hanging in the back of his closet and he’d probably try it on, once in a while, but he’s too fat to fit in it! Loyalty is a very ‘Republican’ trait, one they share with other curs and mutts (with apologies to the canines!)

btw I wonder how many people realize that most Civil War statues and monuments WERE put up (also put up with…….) during the Jim Crow era and the civil rights struggles, precisely and exactly to intimidate minorities and their allies? Which is why reactionaries (and racists, and, let’s face it, imbeciles) of today want to keep them up, to continue to intimidate?

Lee also did not want any statues depicting him erected. Those statues were erected in the 1920s and 30s at the height of the Jim Crow south. You don’t see statues of Kaiser Wilhem II or Adolf Hilter in Germany.
