And there are far too many people today that will argue vehemently that sitting down to eat while wearing a hat really isn’t horribly bad manners… I’m not one of those people, but, sadly, they’re everywhere these days.
Maybe, it is because I come from out west, or maybe, it is because I do not know anyone, who wears a hat inside his home, that I cannot conceive why any man would wear a hat indoors, when home.
I think within the US we have micro-culures that have different expectations. I’ve spent my 59 years in the wine country of northern california and we have agriculture, cattle, software companies, lot of businesses,etc. that when you go into the different areas show different protocol in the restaurants (regardless of the menu price). I don’t like paying $52 for a steak and seeing a guy with a John Deere cap, but there you go.
