    I used to call the barley soup that they served in the school cafeteria “barely soup”!

    I was in my late teens before I discovered that there was such a thing as a good soup. All we ever had at home was that Campbell’s condensed stuff, and school cafeteria soup wasn’t any better. So I never ordered soup in a restaurant because I assumed it would be the same.

    My Grandfather made barely soup. Lots of broth, a few vegetables, and he would wave the soup bone over it for flavor. I found a tiny giblet of meat one time, and was giving him grief about it. He told me to give it back. He needed it for the next batch of soup.
