If the pennies were doubled on each square the total would be 1.8446 * 10^17 dollars.
It would work if, he put $.01 on the first square and $.02 on each of the other squares. (63 x $.02) + $.01 = $1.27. Guess it’s a lesson to read the question carefully. Very underhanded thing to do to his child though.

Nonsense, he has just shown his son that you need to distinguish between what is said, and what is assumed. All part of life and math.
