Florida has “The Baker Act” for threatening others or self-threatening which involves involuntary commitment for up to 72 hours.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Mental_Health_Act

The rules for “Involuntary commitment” varies from state to state, but all states allow it. Many states have different names for “involuntary commitment.” In Maryland, for example, it’s called “Emergency Petition” after the statute spelling out the rules for committing a person.

The lawyer in the strip is correct in that all states have to have the “petitioner” (i.e., the state, the police, a doctor or a relative, say) prove the patient poses a clear danger to themselves or to others.

If you have a PRO account (or even if you don’t), I recommend you log into your account at beta.gocomics.com (before the transition), and check your profile (MY PROFILE in the dropdown menu shown by clicking your avatar). You may be surprised by what’s there (may want to change it, like I did). If you change it, I don’t know that the change will be effective after the transition (may want to check your profile again).

@missanyssa: don’t need to threaten anyone in Florida, just invoke stand-your-ground afterwards

I was expecting it to default to this view today, but it’s still telling me that it will start “Jan 9, 2017.” Comments from one view don’t carry over to the other. So far, no opinion one way or the other. Does it do bold?Does it understand line returns?

    Paragraph breaks?

    Line returns, no.

If you do two, though, you get what looks like a paragraph break.

A story well known among academic psychologists is of the 2 psychiatrists who feigned mental illness to get themselves committed to an asylum, just to see what life was like from the patient’s perspective, then tried to get out a couple of weeks later by explaining what they’d done — and the institution refused to release them because they were supposedly “delusional”. Fortunately, they’d arranged for colleagues on the outside to spring them if they weren’t able to pull it off themselves. But there’s evidently a strong presumption of craziness once you’re “in the system”.
