When, and where, I grew up the stores didn’t put up the Christmas decorations until the Friday after Thanksgiving, and as superposition said, fireworks only on the 4th. I also remember a store I worked in once when the manager told me to start putting up the Christmas decorations in mid August. I was so shocked my response was to ask: “Are you nuts?” I was surprised I didn’t get fired.

…and DQs were only open in summer, and you couldn’t get many fruits “out of season”. Special was special.

The extension of holiday season has really made me look forward to it with loathing—and I thought that was just because I am an old grouch. From these posts, I guess there are a bunch of others who also find it takes the “special” out of the holiday…

I didn’t think I was that much older than you. I remember when Christmas started after Thanksgiving. Of course results may be different in Canada, where the start was the unobserved Guy Fawkes Day.

I recall a time when I hadn’t heard the term at all. I also recall when I avoided the evening news because it was always focussed on how much money was flowing in to the economy because of that term. It sure besmirched the holidays for me.

The great mid-20th century essayist, Harry Golden, suggested this scenario for why fireworks on Christmas. Slaves wanted to know why the fireworks in July. It was explained that it was in celebration of the war that gave us our freedom. You mean we can be free by fighting for it? Conference, and it was decided that fireworks should be in celebration of Baby Jesus, meek and mild, and so there are more fireworks at Christmas than July 4th.
