I thought this way too. Until I worked at a library near a school with uniforms. The kids changed clothes before they came to the library. They had a lot more diversity uber there way they dressed than my jeans and t-shirt generation did.
I spent 30 years in the military . . . and 4 of them at a civilian grad school (wearing civilian clothes), where folks always asked me HOW I could stand to wear uniforms every day.
Then, when the program sponsor came and we had to do a fancy dog-and-pony brief. Each and every one of us wore some variation on blue blazer, white shirt, tie/scarf.

Try living your life as a uniformed nurse, military, police, security guard, EMT…. the list goes on and on.
