Bit of a difference, though. The gag here is that they are blackened with soot. The usual gag is that a cigar or something blows up in someone’s face and turns them into a lame stereotype, complete with ersatz ethnic utterances (like the catch phrase of a popular entertainer).

I like the glee on the face of The Imp in the last panel! It’s as if he’s getting a real kick out of Flip and Nemo being dark skinned too.
