When the story sorts itself out, we’ll discover that prior to snatching the Star Wars reel of film from the Spumantis (and unseen by us), Heart picked up a second reel from a sidewalk sale junk table under the awning at the second-hand appliance and fix-it shop next door. She palmed the real reel and threw the decoy to Dean.
It’ll be an homage to the old movie serials like Flash Gordon, in which there’d be a seemingly escape-proof death trap at the end of each week. The next week’s segment would overlap in time, showing the cliffhanger setup from a different perspective, which would give them a way to wriggle out of the deathtrap.
Of course, Star Wars was in part an homage to those old serials, so this is a nice touch in bringing things full circle.
