Okay, Greg Evans, you just crossed over into the unbelievable zone … In what universe does a twenty year old, who has had a fight at New Years with a so-so boyfriend, then goes out and purchases airline tickets? With what money?? Oh right, besides attending college classes we don’t see, she also has part time job that we never see – even off panel!!

Well, I guess you did have to play to the Luann True Believers … a loyal to the end group, no matter how small …

Maybe just talking to him would have been a lot better investment in the “relationship” (if you can even call it that) than planning a trip would have been, Luann. Quill had no reason to be certain event that you were still his girlfriend, so he moved ahead with his life. You should do the same.-However, this strip isn’t good in writing break-ups (or especially realistic courtships, for that matter), so this will drag on. Lu, Q, and Pru will go on the road together while Quill performs the job he signed up for. Maybe then he will just stay in NYC, since physically moving away is how the strip always manages a break-up.

This relationship has reached a logical end unless Quill changes his track. Luann has been pretty supportive of Quill but he’s been less supportive of HER needs (The Fuse is TJ’s and her folks’ baby). It’s sad. Maybe Pru will become a more 3 dimensional character and set Quill on the right path? Unless she is shifty … Maybe it’s the way her eyes are drawn..

Let’s face it, Q & L are growing apart and it’s time they let it happen.

Well we do see Luann’s job. She works with the kids, she doesn’t just volunteer there, she gets paid for it. That was established a long time ago. And given the number of times she’s been castigated for not making plans, I find it hilarious that now she’s wrong for booking the tickets as planned. At this point I hope she goes with a friend & meets a great guy so Quill can stop taking for granted that she’ll be there when he wants her.

As I said, Luann takes a BIG risk – as only Quill can use the ticket (she can’t get a friend to take his place w/o paying a BIG re-ticketing fee) … also, she would need a lot of info on Quill for an airline to accept a ticket purchase on a foreign national on (an assumed) Student Visa … lots of details in the real world that have conveniently ignored …

Lu had a part time paying job for over a year. she has been saving for this trip since last summer when Quill first asked her to go. When quill talked to her at Halloween about postponing the trip at winter break b/c they were going to help her parents with the Fuse opening, he chastised Luann that she had not really " acted on his plans". I think he said something like did you buy tickets? no. Did you book a hotel? No. So now QUILL and people are mad because she acted on his suggestion and actually took steps instead of just dreaming about the trip in her mind.

Why is everyone all peeved at Luann for doing the rrip stuff. When they helped her parents they postphoned the trip idea for spring break. They had a fight on NYE and Quill decides it will change plans in the spring? So, Luann is foolish because her assumption was that spring break was still happening and their fight would be in the past? I get that Luann has issues, but she isn’t wrong here.

Check out the strips I linked to just above.

The last time Quill made other plans over the top of their plans and Luann objected, he dismissed it by pointing out that she had not booked flights or a hotel.

Now she has done just that, and she’s now left holding the bag.

Face it. Quill is a guy who always places what he wants to do over what his partner wants to do. And if they’ve made plans, tough. It is just “talk”, nothing concrete. Well now it is “concrete”.

Luann, it’s time to move on. He is never going to change.

I think people are dumping on Luann more on Quill because of the way she’s reacting. No one is upset at Quill’s lukewarm response to Luann taking some control and responsibility for a plan. Also, if Quill resides in New York (correct?) then it’s her stuff she would have to have ready and paid for. I mean, if he’s going to school why isn’t up there already? Am I missing something? What urkes me is that Quill ‘seemed’ to have made up his mind to break up the relationship and he never did, why isn’t anyone mad at him at that?

It was Quill who set the terms. “Plans are just talk until concrete action has been done.” In fact, he even specifically stated that plans for a trip are only real when you book the flights and the hotel reservation.

So now Luann has done exactly according to his terms, and has booked the flights and the hotel reservations. It’s not Luann’s fault. She is only going by what he, himself stated were the terms.

He’s been caught. How is he going to weasel out of this one?

It doesn’t take 3000 dollars to go away for the weekend. Hubby & I have used Priceline or Hotwire many times for weekend trips. We usually spend well under 1000 dollars. And if you catch Southwest during a fare sale you can get a roundtrip flight for 2 to NYC from Chicago for about $400. 2 nights in a hotel or bed and breakfast for between $200 & $400. As Luann lives at home her expenses are pretty low, I’m certain she has more than $800 in her savings. Not to mention all she had to pay for in advance was the flight. You don’t pay for hotel reservations (unless you have a great prepaid rate) until the stay.

Betting Luann will still go. Without Quill but with her Mom, who could end up paying most of the hotel bill. The hotel probably hasn’t been paid for yet unless she had to pay a one-night deposit. And that had to be done with a credit card (does she have one?) So she’s only out the airfare so far most likely.

For those who suggest she either “sells” or “takes a friend” with her, when was the last time you took a really good look at the rules for airline tickets? You can’t just change the name on a ticket. If it’s refundable, you can get a refund (highly unlikely as Luann probably got the cheapest tickets she could) find someone else with the exact same name as Quill (again highly unlikely) or maybe change the date. Depending on the airline this could cost as much as the ticket itself. The hotel could be refundable or changeable but sometimes they’re non-refundable and non-changeable too.

Luann didn’t do anything wrong. She is 19. She has held jobs since she was 16. She has been at least mentally planning this trip since April. She wanted to surprise Quill by paying for the flights and hotel herself, which she has been saving for instead of for more college. This trip is very special for her since it is her first real trip out of California as an adult, if not a lifetime.

Obviously, there’s no relationship at all here. Quill makes plans for the break on his own. Lu makes reservations for a trip on her own. Neither mentions anything to the other, assuming his/her plans are all that matters, and that the other will be fine with it.

Actually this doesn’t surprise me one bit, for those who are going this is unreal, didn’t we have her doing the research and buying the tickets before the fight… before pru showed up. For those saying what money – she’s working at a day care… and so far she’s not fretted about Tuition, so it’s not hard to see the parental units kicking in for that (or loans which don’t have payments till after school…)

It’s a clear progressive line in the plot… Quill realizes he isn’t making time for her and putting her off… but he also isn’t willing to give up anything else, and it’s starting to sink in for both parties.

Wait wait wait. I like the strip just as much as anyone here does. What I don’t understand though is why we can all believe in such a character and universe that Evans has created but we can’t believe some things in this universe are different, example Luann buying the tickets herself etc. It’s a comic and made not be completely accurate of real life. It’s created for escapism. I never expect things going the way they do in the real world to be exactly the same in a comic I read for entertainment and silliness.

8Wow… that hit me from left field! Very unexpected, but very, very much in keeping with the personalities currently! While it is very “sweet” and very “Valentine-ish” for Luann to have surprised Quill with all this purchased trip materials….. it unfortunately further highlights a) Luann’s difficulty in communication in regards to relationships, and b) a disconnect for Luann to use this gift as a means of apologizing over the argument. If this were to be an interaction with a greater probability of success, we would have had Luann figure out that communication is the key to all aspects of a relationship. Additionally, if we were to have a great TRIP outcome, it would have been far, far better for Luann to be in communication WITH Quill about the plans for the trip RATHER than surprising him with the trip package. I have no idea how this will go at this point. Will Quill stay with his tour gig? If so, will this break up Luann and Quill? Or, will Quill acquiesce, and drop his “gig” and swoon over Luann’s gift… and all is “forgiven”? I could see either approach as being taken by Greg. But, with Valentine’s Day in only two more days…. I am betting on the "swooning/forgiving/giving up "gig"" option as more likely.

What would be selfish about her having savings? Her parents decided to start a business, there’s no indication that other than wanting to step out on a ledge they were financially unstable before launching Fuse. Also, in terms of housing, food etc we know Luann isn’t exactly a financial burden on that front. She has a job, she’s at a community college, and she is shown volunteering & getting her friends to volunteer to help with the launch. Also I keep seeing people assert that they are in LA, but they are actually in unnamed suburb somewhere in the US. If Gunther & Rosa can go to Peru after graduation (which is totally plausible) I’m not sure what’s so shocking about a trip to NY. College students usually do travel, often long distances and yes, it’s not cheap, but it isn’t earth shattering expensive either.

-No, she really can’t see him any time she wants, even though he is working part of the time at The Fuse. When she shows up and he’s too busy to talk, the fact that he is physically at her parent’s business does not make him any more available to her. He might as well be on the moon.

When she showed up for a pre-arranged meeting with him while he was backstage at Mooney U and started to tell him about Toni and Brad’s wedding, he admitted that he had forgotten they were supposed to get together, and he ‘penciled her in’ for a future lunch.

If he isn’t available for discussions when she physically comes to visit (not just when she texts or leaves voicemail), the message from him is clear. He doesn’t see her as important enough to him to make time for her. Not making out time. Just any time at all.

God forbid Evans doesn’t include every detail of her life but scholarships could take care of the other stuff.3. Myself and friends did travel quite a bit in college. Not nearly as much flying because a car trip was always funner but we did have the money saved away for trips and didn’t go broke.

I used to think Quill was more mature than Lu but it has become quite the reverse. To be in fight-mode is one thing, but making a decision such as taking that gig when you had vacation plans with Lu – not even giving her the courtesy of discussing it with her first – entirely lame. He deserves a good dumping, do it Lu.

As I said before, one argument and Quill decides they’re no longer a couple, and “moves on with his life?” And all you people agree with him? You must have had some pretty poor relationships in you time.

Bottom line is, Quill is not at all invested in the relationship. He would rather do ANYTHING but spend time with Luann. Even when they have plans, he “forgets” and lets other things get in the way.

Luann is TOO invested in the relationship. She should dump Quill, walk away and not look back. I doubt that will happen, because the writers seem to want to keep portraying Luann as an air-headed, boy crazy 14 year old who must have a boyfriend at all costs, instead of a young woman with talents and skills of her own.

Luann’s mistake was thinking Quill wanted to be a part of her life. He’s made it clear he doesn’t. I wish they’d let her grow up a little, dump this jerk and move on.

It could be possible that she bought the tickets far in advance of the fight, you can get a better deal by buying them early rather than waiting until the last minute. A friend of mine in the airline industry says you get the best deals if you buy tickets at least 21 days in advance.Great point!

Why in the world would you make plans to go on a trip with someone you aren’t even talking to? If she were really interested in saving the relationship, shouldn’t she be talking instead of trip planning?

Suppose Quill had approached Luann, instead of vice versa. The conversation would have gone like this: “Hi Lunn, I know you aren’t speaking to me, but we are still going to go away together on a cozy trip for two to NYC over spring break, right?” Luann would have slugged him, and rightly so. So why are people so down on Quill for assuming that Lu’s no longer talking to him meant that all plans were off, in which case he made his own?

Some parents don’t get that big of a hike in their insurance or mind paying the insurance. My parents carried both my sister and myself until I found a decent job and could branch off on to my own policy. Based on Lu’s parents they seem like the type that wouldn’t mind either. It’s up to Lu to want to help I agree but at the same time it still shouldn’t hinder her from traveling or having the money to do so. My parents themselves encouraged me to save and travel during the time I was under their policy with what little I was making to pay rent and other necessities. In fact the insurance was the only thing they paid for during the time I left home at 18 for school until I finally landed a good job a couple of years ago.

If real life is to be followed then Quill either is no longer just on only a student visa, or the position offered is in a student troupe or one that has an arrangement w the theater company. For those interested, the regulations and restrictions for those on various types of visas can be found online, and student visas include strict restrictions upon sources and amounts of income. That is why he can not go for a paid job at the Fuse but he can volunteer to set things up so that the university theater group has a stage to use.

According to a Web site that does the math: The flight distance from San Diego, California to Sydney, Australia is 7,507 miles.-Quill’s journey probably took a couple of hundred miles or more longer, since he likely flew into LAX, and we don’t know just where he lives in relation to Sydney.

Except that’s not what we see. Community college hovers right around $50 per credit hour. Now her parents could be paying that, it could be free for local students (that’s the case in my city) or she could have a Pell grant paying her tuition & other college expenses. She does drive a car, no indication that she isn’t paying for gas & her portion of the family insurance plan. With her schedule of school & work I doubt she’s home enough to eat into the existing grocery budget. There’s no indication that Luann hasn’t been paying some or all of her way. Nor that she is using all of her money towards this trip. She’s had nearly a year to put money aside. Most college students can put away $600 in less time than that.

You keep saying the trip cost 2K. Someone else claimed 3K. Yet actual travel right now from LA to NYC with early booking for spring break is $300 roundtrip. So let’s say she prepaid for the tickets. That puts her expenses at $700. I don’t think her parents are suffering from a lack of $70 extra a month across the last year. And yes, you can pay for this trip and contribute to expenses at home on what a student with a decent part time job makes. She wouldn’t be making minimum wage. Afterschool & summer day camp teacher positions like hers usually start at $10-$12 an hour.

For pictures to display they must be available on a public-accessible Internet server. The “number” reference comes from the fact that the link to strip image file locations here on GoComics end with a numerical sequence that identifies the specific comic in question.

You cannot post pictures here directly from your own computer or phone, if that’s what you’re asking. (I’m guessing that is the case from the way you phrased your question.)

I just came up with another one of those scenario sets which we all need to create from time to time in order to maintain our sanity while discussing this little soap opera comic strip …

Quill takes the spring break job, discovers Tiffany also wrangled a fill-in part in the same touring company. Neither comes back to Moody afterwards.

Gunther and Piro move into Tiffany’s old suite in the dorm, leaving Bernice to wonder what they’re up to in there. She ends up losing her mind and is committed to Pitts State Mental Hospital.

Luann realizes she needs to get away from all this madness and moves to Hawaii, where coincidentally Aaron Hill has just broken up with his Chinese girlfriend and welcomes her with open arms.

Brad and Toni start to wonder if getting married is worth it after all that drama, quit the fire department, and join the Peace Corps instead.

The strip continues, centered around the only two remaining long-term characters, Crystal and Knute.

As I’ve never insulted you either directly or indirectly. I’ve gotta say they are probably taking shots at you for your consistent defending of a position that numerous other posters have, in fact, pointed out is incorrect this time around. Several people have pointed out that it is economically feasible for Lu to have bought the tickets etc.(some using real life data and info) yet you continue to say it is not. This is in fact the way trolls operate on the internet. Another behavior that they are known to do is to go to the moderators of the board when people don’t fall into line with their opinion. Now, I’m not saying you are trolling today, I’m new to group, but I have seen this behavior with our back and forth earlier and that is why I decided to stop responding until now.

Luann is a romantic. Quill is a young man with ambition. They are great for each other until they are not. This is where she needs to decide how much hurt she will take. Greg needs to have her and Bernice take the trip, meet up with Delta, find out that Pru is gay and not into Quill and send her back ready to deal with her emotional confusion. Quill needs to get into the game or end it as a friend.

Iimp, sweety, listen: every single one of us is wrong at times just as every single one of us is right at times. We are each only human, and that is fine. Also, things seen as indirect insults more often are in the eyes of the observer rather than originating from the poster.I understand how it feels to respond like that. Long ago in the dark ages i was a battered child (one parent and a grandparent on the other side, while the remaining parent did nothing to stop it, so for a very long while i was very insecure, worried that people were talking about me or making indirect insults, and making up excuses for a great many things because i was scared sick of what a mistake might threaten for me.If nothing else helps then DO remind yourself that each of us here is only peripheral to your life. Seriously, we might at times say things to think about and over time some of us may become friends, but for the most part we do not matter in your life. If you first realize who is peripheral online then you can grow that lesson. I know that you can because many years ago i did on a different set of fora.We are each only human. We can not be perfect. You may learn some things from us but it is best for you to not become to invested emotionally because ultimately we are for the most part only peripheral to your real life. I hope that helps.

some have thought that Luann may have bought the tickets before the fight (at the Fuse on New Years’ eve). Actually I think it was after, and just a few weeks ago coinciding with the sunday strip where Luann was telling Nancy that she wanted to go on a trip with Quill. Probably she also wanted to borrow some $ to help pay for the tix. I’m sure Luann thought of it as a way to get her relationship with Quill back on track and that and that she would surprise him on Valentine’s day. While it is hard to support the idea of firming up plans for a trip with someone that you aren’t on good terms with and without even consulting that person, Quill too can be faulted for making other spring break plans without telling Luann, given that they had talked about going to NYC during that time.

Maybe, once she gets over her big mad, this will be a misfortune from which Luann can learn a valuable life lesson.

Unless they can come to a lightning-fast accommodation, it looks like this will end the relationship between Quill and Luann….

Implausible, if your strong reactions have nothing to do with anything more serious, then you need to understand that to so very many of the rest of us your responses seem very overdone for what you are referencing. Even if there really are all of the insults you mention your level of response is much more extreme. If you can not learn to weigh what people write better and then adjust your responses accordingly you are going to hurt yourself most of all. Being avoidable, it is such a huge sadness to see this unfolding. If you are going through something terrible in real life, please, please, please, seek out someone who can help you heal. Those people do exist. If the first person is not the right one to help with healing then the second might be. I went through that as a kid, too. I am trying to help you partly because that second man, who also had been battered, helped me.

BTW, if anyone is still reading through the comments, here’s a tip from someone who used to be on the road three weeks out of every month: If the city you’re going to has multiple airports with commercial service, search for prices for the city. If you look for LAX→JFK, you’ll probably only see flights to Kennedy, while LAX→NYC often shows flights to LaGuardia and Newark, which may save you money.

This whole “touring show” sounds pretty much like a completely made-up thing (by the Evanses), so who knows how it would work. In “real life”, an actual show that’s on tour would have an understudy as part of its full-time cast, but in the Evansverse apparently they get a new one for every week. What’s not clear is whether this means that Quill would fill in for the week that the show will be in Pitts, or will he go to wherever the show happens to be during the week of spring break? I suppose it will work out to be the latter, so that Lu and Q will go to NYC after all. Clearly Pru will be part of the show too, so there will always be a chaperon with them, as the strip requires in order to guarantee its reputation as “family entertainment”.

For starters, I was making a “humorous connection”, in general! – Second, I notice that you do like to criticize the author and creative force behind this strip. You have insinuated things, and criticize. So, if there were any criticism of you , or anything you suspect directed towards you, does that mean it’s okay to do that to the author, but not to you?

Besides, I myself have gotten plenty of criticism (among other things). I’m very sure it’s happened to just about all of us! This past week, “Dogs Rule” called my stuff…well, “stuff”…ramblings and such. Instead of firing back with hostility, I just left a response intended to “break the ice”, and make a point. I did that about last Thursday or Friday, I think. He must not have seen it, though. But, anyway, I was saying that just to say that we all have had somebody say one thing or another, from time to time, or daily. All I was even doing was commenting on someone else’s comment, much like you have done, to others, or again, in reference to the strip’s author. I might just flag you for insinuating something about me … and I don’t appreciate it…

When I was in college, I had a scholarship and financial aid. I also worked part time while in college and full time during the summers. My parents gave me money for food. I also went on a trip with friends every year the week after Christmas. Because I managed and saved my money, I always had more spending money than my friends from wealthier families. I don’t think this is implausible (no pun on your name intended). However, with a name like that, you should be more open to the implausible.

LOL! My degree is not what i wanted it to be. I had planned to go into Primatology. (Gads, still rhyming without trying to…) i wanted to look at some questions in evolution from that perspective which meant i woukd probably wind up teaching gross as my usual non-research work. Anyway, in the same year i got two serious but separate medical problems, one requiring major surgery and the other possibly a bad case of Lyme though it was not discovered yet so no one knew why i had neuropathy. The physical stress trigger onset of some severe allergies which introduced themselves w anaphylaxis. So, i had to cut my studies short. I even offered to back out of our engagement because i feared being a burden on my then fiancee but he would not hear of it. Luckily, i had learned how to learn so have continued to do so through the years. Complicated, huh?

I agree! There are so many more important things in life that getting very upset about online discussions, especially in relation to a cartoon is a waste of emotional energy which can instead be focused on something constructive.

You will have to circle your wagon by yourself.

OMG, you just flashed my mind back to that scene in Blazing Saddles where the black family had to circle their own wagon because “the white folk didn’t let us travel in their circles” …
