First Luann was going to go with Quill to NYC last summer.

Then they agreed to do it over Christmas.

And then they postponed it because of The Fuse’s grand opening.

AND QUILL THINKS THERE WAS NO COMMITMENT!!

Turn on your heel, Luann, walk away, and don’t look back.

The good thing would be Luann quietly handing Quill the boomerang necklace and leaving for her college library, where she can start reading about some classes to take next term.

Unfortunately for those of us who liked this character, the creator of the character seems bent on making her into a magnet for misery. So he will probably next show her on her knees, sobbing to Quill and begging him to take her to New York.

That will end a lot of readership, but it will please all those who post at ArcaMax, and a number of them who now post here. Maybe that is now the audience that this ’toon is aimed at.

Calm. Deep breaths. Let yourself feel cold and hard like a stone. Remove the necklace. Take his hand and hold it palm side up. Deposit the necklace. Tell him that you hope to be friends (since you really do work as friends). Wait till you are away from him to cry because with how he has behaved in recent months he has not earned your tears. Then let’s see Mr Gray later overhear Quill and Gunther and step in with adult advice. It would be a way for Gunther to learn to talk w him, too, by the first problem being Quill’s.Ultimately i think that a breakup will bring relief to these characters.I doubt it will play out like my first two paragraphs, though…

Well, to be fair, plan status aside, Quill probably thought that it was “dunzo” as soon as Luann walked away on New Years’ Eve, during their argument. – But it’s not going to matter to Luann… given her feeling that “nothing’s going on” for her, except the possibility to go to NYC, she seems to have really been counting on it. – But had she been able to just express her feelings at the time, when there was the opening to get it all out in the open, perhaps Quill wouldn’t have assumed that it was “all for naught”. – Again, though, it probably won’t matter. Quill could be right, or wrong, but it seems like Luann isn’t going to accept anything but…. Psych!!!! Gotcha!". Yup, it’ll be a case of: “Heads I win, tails….well, it better come up heads!”….

Hey in show business, entertainment, music and performance arts I always note that even serious couples have a problem being able to deal with the absences and the time commitments that kind of career takes. In this case Quill has a real commitment to the kind of career that this takes. He came back from down under to pursue it. Was Luann just a second priority? A girl he really likes, but not one that come before his dream of an acting career? Remember, as Sukie pointed out, everytime Luann wants to have some time with him something he wants to do comes up, including I would argue the FUSE. After all he is spending all of his time working on it with Pru, whom I really don’t think is someone he is really interested in more than as a friend and fellow show business person. Luann is not a show business person, she is not a rolling stone. He is. I am afraid I am coming around to the view she needs to end this relationship. She also needs to focus on school, and her eventual career, and I am sure, at least I hope, the Evans crew (if there is one) will give her a break, and let her heal (again) and with the oncoming marriage, somehow have the right man come into her life in the middle of all that. Could it be someone we already know about? Or someone new? Her heart is going to be broken, whether she realizes it or not. Even though she is a comic character, and not real, this makes me feel sad. Bye, bye Quill.

This makes me sad. But on the plus side, junior college is generally two years and then many people transfer to a four-year college to finish their degree. Because so much of “the gang” is involved, it’s likely Luann will transfer to Moony. My hope is that after a decent interval, she and Quill will be civil and friendly toward each other, Luann will major in education and art, and possibly meet a nice student-teacher. It’s possible Bernice’s brother will come into the picture again, but I’d like to see Luann meet someone new.

Did not Luann take responsibility for finding airfares to NYC for Christmas? And Quill asked her how the search was going? To which Luann said she was “thinking” about getting online?

I believe this is the defining moment when the relationship truly did clearly reveal that it was never going to work out … that Luann and Quill were just going to do this circle dance, refusing to an actual emotional commitment. If Luann had any desire, she would have informed the Parents Degroot that she and Quill were spending Christmas in NYC.

But Luann had zero commitment and thus, never spent that “maturity capital” on informing the parental unit. No, she dodged the bullet because The Fuse had reached a point of a grand opening and thus, the NYC trip was a no-go.

But in reality, it never had a chance to be a go in the first place – and neither did this relationship

Luann is usually a bit over dramatic and immature, but it takes two to really screw it up. I am ready for Luann to start maturing a little. Like others, I would like to see her with some self-confidence and assertiveness here. I would like to see her tell him that he just made her emtire point. "Don’t make someone a priority when you are just an option to them. " Don’t be an option Luann. You don’t feel you are “doing” anything? Do something then. Dump Quill, join the Teach for America program and take an adventuresome spring break job yourself. Forget about boyfriends making Luann. Let Luann be more than a teenage boycrazy girl for once. Hijinks and shenanigans still available!

Some commenters seem to want to attach fault to Quill or, in some cases, to Luann. But isn’t it more about a willingness to work on the relationship and to cherish one’s partner? When Quill hears Luann’s anger, he thinks, “Well she certainly doesn’t want to be with me in NYC! Better make an alternative plan.” And Luann is not able to calmly sit down, and get clear on whether their relationship can ever fit her needs. I think she has a fantasy picture of Quill that is becoming a bit ragged at the edges. I want them to try to work through this, and then (probably) decide respectfully to go their separate ways. Angry partings or icy cold ones leave more scars.

7Overall, very interesting and exciting. With no plans having been made at this late date, the Spring Break NYC was not particularly possible anyhow. So, I think Quill was wise. If Luann is so upset about the change in plans, one way she could cope is to talk with Quill and decide if perhaps their “big trip” could be at wherever Quill is going to do his Spring Break acting gig. If they really want a relationship, this is a way to compromise so both can have some of the “win”.

What we see here is the assumption on the part of the male that he is in no way responsible for any part of a relationship and that he gets to make decisions that affect his partner with no thought.

It doesn’t get better with age or so-called “commitment” and unfortunately, the male partner usually does not like anything on the part of the female that might change his path or affect his goals.

There are exceptions, but not a lot.

-Excuse me, sir, but I apparentlyi need to ask this question again.

When a man gets angry or annoyed at the woman in his life, perhaps for always putting her job ahead of family or some other situation, it is called ‘getting angry’.

Why is it that when a woman gets angry or annoyed for some similar situation, it is called a ‘tantrum’ or a ‘hissy fit’?

If there are any young women who read the postings here, they are getting a very sad message, which is: you must always agree with anything and everything the man in your life says or does, or you are guilty of having a tantrum or a hissy fit.

Please do me the favor of describing Gunther’s reaction to his mother dating. Would you call that a hissy fit? I sincerely doubt it.

Lu walk away and don’t cry over it. You can’t lose something your never had. Apparently he wasn’t even a very good friend, at least not like he is with Pru with whom he has “tons in common.”

Call Toni, she’ll understand better than your currently-useless Bernice friend.

Now there’s a good idea. Toni could use the distraction from Brad’s overzealous wedding planning anyway …

Ever wonder if Capt. Evans has a long range idea in mind as to who Luann, Gunther, Bernice, and Tiffany will end up with? He may, but as long as the strip runs we will probably never see it, and that’s okay. At least that’s three young girls that George Clooney never hit on.

Break up with him and then please…please…go hook up with the long-haired guy in the dorms. Its high time that this allegedly adult woman LOST HER VIRGINITY.

Besides she’s not mature enough to set foot in New York and the artists of this strip aren’t qualified to draw it, nor write a script that would do a New York visit justice.

Pretty clear here that Quill puts himself before Luann every time. I suppose the next bombshell will be that Pru is involved in his plans as well. Can we please boot this guy out of the strip? Luann deserves better than this self-centered jerk.

I think Quill maybe jumped the gun on this one…but it’s not as bad as I was expecting. It all seems out of character for the way Quill has acted in the past….always pretty mature even when Luann was not. Pru does not seem to be a good influence on him.

How the “Quilly!” and “Mr. Perfect!” ‘shippers have turned against their hero!!! I suppose it’s finally OK to say that this character never had any substance, although pointing that out is probably irrelevant now. Obviously, he will eventually move to New York, since the only way that’s permitted to break up with Luann is physically to move away. Bye, Q-man. It’s been… boring.

It is hard to imagine with all the non-interaction between Luann and Quill over the past few months that she would expect plans for a trip (with Quill) to proceed as normal. So I am puzzled by her complete surprise. The relationship is not the way it was when Quill first asked her to go to New York with him. That said, if Quill has any desire to keep with his promise (despite their non-relationship) he could ask her to go with him on the tour. I still wonder about the sunday strip a couple weeks ago when Luann was telling Nancy of her desire to take a trip with Quill. It didn’t seem like normal sunday fare. Could it be that they will go on some trip together? The only possibility is this tour.

Geesh – you want this relationship to end just because Quill was being a guy and accepted a job for the time period when there was no plans made? He was being mature and accepted a JOB and added acting experience to his RESUME. That is something to be commended upon rather than the other way around the way you guys are talking. Luann has been very immature throughout this relationship with Quill. It is time for Quill to find someone else – a mature girl who has outgrown high school stuff. Luann is still stuck on it. Even Bernice moved on. Tiffany too. For that matter, so has Gunther. Luann, GROW UP and move on, for heaven’s sake.

    RE: capricorn9th

" ……… Luann has been very immature throughout this relationship with Quill………."-———————————————————————————

Luann is immature in that: (1) she seems incapable of charting a course or direction in her work and activities, and (2) she figures that Quill, therefore, is responsible for filling all the voids she feels she has in her life. Luann does not accept responsibility for finding her own meaning in life.

Aww, but she knew he wouldn’t be in Pittsville forever. Not if he is good at acting and singing.

Now she has to decide whether to be a supportive girlfriend or as so many others have said, hand back the necklace.

I think Prudence knew. That’s what her look and giving them room to talk would be about.

It has amazed me how so many of the people talking about the failure to communicate by the characters are themselves failing to communicate. So many are speaking their minds — which is fine and often good — but then failing to themselves listen. Are there actions and inactions on the parts of each of these characters for which they have blame to assume if they are honest with themselves? Definitely. Is one or the other to blame for them growing apart? No, of course not. * It is not even a blame situation. * A young person can no more control which aspects of himself or herself mature faster than the person can slow the growth of his or her feet or chin. The person can and should put in effort, but each person matures at different rates in the many various sorts of maturation which occur. There is no blame there, just streams which had been running parallel now facing different bedrock, slopes, springs, and other factors so that they no longer echo each other well. With growth what once meshed or fit may no longer do so — with absolutely no one to blame for that. Many changes in life are not blame situations. There has been a lot to learn. Different viewpoints can be interesting. I just wish as many listened as spoke. Sorry for being so bluntly frank. I am tired, but i think maybe this may be useful if considered.

Also, they don’t have to have so much in common to be good together. They are young and learning to give and take, support and be supportive. If I split with my husband just because we don’t have anything but the kids in common, I’d have missed out on 35 years of loving. It’s part of growing. When you grow apart, you figure out how to grow back together. You don’t leave.

There is no reason that Lu and Q should be a “couple”. They were sweethearts when Luann was a junior in high school. Why should we expect that pairing to last for a lifetime? This has lasted long enough for us to see that each is capable of sustaining a long-term relationship. Now they both should seek to do just that, with someone better suited to each of them.

Nonsense. That’s not how touring shows work. They have a complicated series of covers or swings and if it is a “short” absence (which is implied by this) it will be handled within the company. If it is a permanent absence, they will normally use the swing or cover and move everyone up. Or they will pull up someone who has done the show before and left the company. The idea that they would stick Quinn into the middle is laughable.
