It looks like he lost a bet at the Officer’s Club, or maybe PETA is a lot stronger than everyone thinks.

Here we go again. As much as I like folklore, the idea of the number of hooves in the air signifying anything is an old canard.

Take a look at http://www.snopes.com/military/statue.asp for a nice discussion of the issue.

PS Today’s comic is still hilarious in spite of that minor error.

“If the horse has all four hooves in the air, it means you need glasses.”

It’s an urban legend. Not all statues follow the “rule”.

This statue is of a man whose horse was the jockey. They never won a race, but only because they never finished a race.

    He was Horse-Whipped!

BTW, I agree with wsnaider. Living in DC with more Civil War statues with riders on horses than you can shake a stick the theory of the legs doesn’t hold up.

But we do have a transgendered horse statue in DC! It seems the artist sculpted the CW General in old age as he rode a mare. When the statue was unveiled, his illustrious ancestors were aghast to see the General on a female horse. So the artist had to go back and cast and weld the appropriate ‘physical characteristic’ onto the statue!

This must be a statue of Gen. Jubilation T. Cornpone.

♪♫ When we almost had ‘em but the issue still was in doubt, Who suggested the retreat that turned it into a rout? Why it was Jubilation T. Cornpone. Old “Tattered and Torn Pone”, Jubilation T. Cornpone, he kept us hidin’ out. ♪♫

Nice DirtyDragon. I’m always glad for a reference to Lil’ Abner, one of the best strips of all time. Unfortunately the only place I know online that the strips are being re-printed, and I’m not gauche enough to mention a competitor here, only has the right to 2 story lines/ Those two story lines are being repeated ad infinitum. I’m told they are trying to negotiate for further rights but it’s cycled through about 4 times since then so it doesn’t look hopeful.

Nobody has said a word about how thin Chaz’s hair looks from this angle! I’m too distracted by that to give the strip’s subject much thought!

BTW, DirtyDragon, are you from the Chicago area?

junebugmom: Absolutely - I had the pleasure of watching Bill Jackson, Postmaster Dirty Dragon, The Blob, Weird (and the Lemon Joke Kid) and all of the gang on WFLD’s “Cartoon Town”, even before the nationally syndicated “Gigglesnort Hotel”.
