Sheik–Ekert would find little to feed on at Wrigley Field. Cub fans have no expectation of winning, and so feel no anger or frustration when the team loses. In fact, a winning team might disrupt the precious Zen state that develops after spending a sunny summer afternoon guzzling beer in the bleachers.

That ‘precious Zen state’ is called “pohoda”, the Czech equivalent of nirvana or satori that you get from drinking just the right amount of beer. It was Anton Cermak’s great legacy to Cubs fans, even though he was a South Sider.

No, this is NOT the end of the story line… it’s just the beginning!

And there’s no comparison between Cubs fans and Red Sox fans. Cubs fans have always been glass half full, while Red Sox fans just assume someone is going to knock over their glass, no matter how full it is.

I know Wiley, that the strip was written & colored ?2-6 weeks ago? didn’t know of Lebron’s choice to move to Miami. This is Cleveland’s heart ache, closest chance for a major league title since ‘48. The only title was baseball then or ‘64 for football before the leagues combined. Never for basketball.

If you really want to talk World Cup, Ekert needs to go to England. If they ever win it, the Brits will spend the next two weeks talking about the flaws in their side and how poorly they played during the Championship game. But that’s probably not going to happen anyway.

If you really want to bloat Ekert, take him to the Black Hole and mention Al Davis.

When it’s time to get him/it back into captivity, send Ekert to Chicago: Cubs and/or Bears. Those fans are so unable to see the writing on the wall/scoreboard! There are no negative feelings there.

I grew up watching Cubs games with my Mom on WGN television and I’m still a bit loyal to the Cubs–except where the Cincinnati Reds intervene. I moved to the Cincinnati area with my husband over 30 years ago and they’ve grown on me. Plus, they’ve had some winning seasons. However, I still have a soft spot in my heart for the Cubbies.

Dear Wiley–I like the way this arc is going (not that it matters what I think.) Your comic is a pleasure to read!

Remember, this guy is from New England (everyone talks with a Maine accent) so he has to tell every joke on the Red Sox. But it really applies more to Philadelphia fans, and especially Phillies fans, who boo everybody and everything.

And, as many people above have so appropriately commented, it applies especially to right-wing talk show hosts and various other politically pure ideologues - from Sierra Club to Naral to small government - low-tax people to libertarians, etc

I was about to cringe at the thought of it going political, but I was glad to see you took it to a more important place: baseball. (Now if only some of the other commentators would remember that baseball is closer to life than politics is. (Are? I never know if politics is singular or plural….))

Just for fun, I heard about an octopus in Germany that has picked the winners of all the games so far. It has picked Spain for the champ and Germany for third place. If this comes to pass, you heard it from the octopus first.

But even if Spain wins, I think Ekert wouldn’t find that great a meal in the Netherlands – they’re pretty laid back.

Wiley- good to hear! Not a sports fan but growing up and spending most of my life in various Chicago ‘burbs, I know that other cities are far more negative - as Wrigley was well attended while other losing teams had empty stadiums (I see that suff in the news).

When the Red Sox play the Cubs in the world series, the sun, moon and stars will turn to blood, the sky will be rent like unto an old garment, and the federal government at the ends of the earth will behave in a sensible and prudent manner. Then the end of days has come.
