It looks like we’re seeing an episode of “Local Boy Makes Good” (in our case, Doctor Toon). Two days in a row? Awesome.

and why did Fonzie have to jump the shark? Was it just to create the metaphor?

The nuclear coffee is still going strong, Doc. Of course, we shouldn’t be surprised by that at all.

I saw a news mention yesterday that some researchers (yes, those guys again) believe that the morning caffeine jolt is really the result of an addicted brain deprived of caffeine overnight returning to “normal”.

    Discuss among yourselves.

There may be something to that. I know that without my morning CocoMocha (or even better in a way, a can of Starbucks’ Doubleshot Mocha, “Energy + Coffee”), my brain’s get up and go finds that it got up and went.

Of course, Dear Sir, bear in mind that I take a lot of chemical baling wire the night before, a fair amount of which is soporific in the first place. So I may not be a proper statistical example on this one.

I don’t think my brain would survive a shot of Doctor Toon’s World Famous Nuclear Coffee, however, Turkish or French coffee (which I can handle) is positively watered down by comparison.

Doc you shouldn’t be surprised. We have known for sometime that it wouldn’t be long before your Nuclear Coffee infected the world.

When an older sibling leaves for college, they’re kind of hard to write into the story line. Guest appearances on holiday episodes, where they drop off a ton of laundry, then disapear to party with old friends?

I think “The Flagging Man” would be much more appropriate than “Doctor”…

    Edit: NOT Doc Toon, people.

Bad Idea ~ Serve Nuclear Coffee to teenagers or kids you will be around.

Good Idea ~ Serve Nuclear Coffee to teenagers or kids whom you will not be around. Especially before a transfer to the ‘other’ parent.

    Congratulations Doc Toon!

The thing about Chuck Cunningham is not simply that he went off to college, but that after a few years his entire history seemed to have been erased. Richie was the oldest of two children (and the only son), rather than the middle child of three.

The same thing happened with Mike on “My Three Sons”; after they wrote him out and wrote in Ernie, he was never mentioned again (as far as I’m aware). Robbie went from middle son to firstborn, Chip from youngest to middle, Ernie was the new youngest, and Bub turned into Uncle Charley…

“My Three Sons” in turn followed the model from the Book of Genesis. When the actor playing Abel wanted out of his contract, the writers devised the whole “murder” plot twist for a season-ending cliffhanger. “Who Slew Abel?” was the question on everyone’s lips during the summer of 3876 BC. The season premiere that September got some of the highest Nielsen numbers in history (a 75 share, but of course this was pre-cable). When it was revealed that the killer was Cain, Abel’s own brother, it revolutionized the Family Drama genre.

Seth was born during May Sweeps in 3874 (new babies are always good ratings stunts), and what was almost unique in the addition of the character is that he was explicitly referred to as a replacement for the departed (and almost never again mentioned) Abel (Genesis 4:25).

Alas, the very stories that are considered the series’ high points were also its swan song. The dynamic of the core cast had changed unalterably. The show staggered on for a few more seasons, but it was clear its best years were behind it - like the difference between the Shelly Long and Kirstie Alley seasons of Cheers!. Of course, since neither Adam nor Eve had siblings, it would have been implausible to try to introduce a “Cousin Oliver”, and that rarely works anyway.

Cain got spun off into his own show which was popular for a while (he walked the Earth, like “Kung Fu” or “Route 66” or “The Incredible Hulk” - the formula has proven durable), but Abel’s hoped-for movie career never got off the ground (like David Caruso or Shelley Long - the formula has proven durable).
