That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard–that the GOP would be sad that nobody was killed as if they would be happy that Americans were killed.

Come on people! Stop ragging. Appreciate this editorial for what it is: it honors the strong, able, vigilant NY police force standing as the first line of defense between the busy NY populace and any lurking sleezeball trying to do harm. This isn’t about profiling. It’s not about politics. It’s simply about honoring those who “Protect and Serve”.

Take the time today to thank a cop or soldier for doing what he/she does so you can go about doing what you do a little safer.

And before any of you jump in again playing the “racial profile” card, let me ask: Just how would YOU depict the criminal element in this editorial? Black? Hispanic? Hirsute? Neo-Nazi? Any face you put on the lurker is going to offend someone. But again I remind you, that isn’t the point of the editorial. Focus on the guy in the middle. And then apologize for being so petty.

The Truth is,The New York Times is not part of the United States;its a SEPARATE COUNTRY, A MONARCHY RULED BY URBAN WITS. Those urban wits are all better than us,more eudcated, more intelligent, and more “sophisticated”in the ways of the world.Meaning, they wear lots of black, and expensive designer suits.(I like Armanit)

Uh,meaning, they real books a lot;and they do not have a tv. They never go out of NY,and they’ve decided that only 2 whole countries exsist; New York,to live in,and Africa,to do charity work in. That’s it.

In fact,I wrote a lot,to New York Socialites, and New York Fashion magazine editors, and I begged them,”hey,my state is super poor, super primative, really badly educated; WE’RE your Africa!!! You can practice being a do-gooder on US. We will not mind at all!!We have tons of homeless, bodyless, broke, poor, starving, choking, and mind-blowing marajuana, oops, and we are all losing our shirts. Yeah. WE ARE AFRICA AND HAITI.

In fact,we have our own “community peace ssong. It goes like this; “We are Su—dan!! /We are the Hai—ti!!! We live in huts, our dogs are mutts, come play with our bay—-bees!! / If you like gruel, you are a fool, cause we eat hotdogs on a stool; / Yes,we are Af-ri-Caaaah!! We’re Hai-teee, too!!!!!!” (deep romantic Sitar playing, and Japanese flat marimba.)

Can you think of anything more romantic, for an Oregonian to do??Besides drying al the hail and snow, and rain off yer gloves, and her nose all the time.

Ken Warren said: “The GOP will turn this into an attack on Obama, and deep in their hearts will be sad that no one was killed.

    As always Party Before Country”

Um Ken… The fact is that there are liberals and Democrats on the airwaves stating that they were disappointed that it was a person from an Islamic group. They hoped or assumed that the bombing was being committed by a homegrown terrorist. So let’s stop assuming the GOP is the bad guy and look at what is actually being said . So who is really putting party before country?

Fact is, we shouldn’t be hoping that anyone is bombing anywhere, but this is the world we live in now.

P.S.- let’s make sure we realize that there is a fine line between common sense and racial profiling. If I see a guy with a bomb it does not matter what he looks like. He has a freaking bomb! I am not going to ignore him just because he looks Muslim or like Timothy McVey. Give me a break.

Yes, the police did a great job finding out who was behind the act of leaving the SUV so quickly and getting him before he left the country. Unfortunately, there are many more like him, and we have to remain on guard.

The administration, DHS, or the Police did not foil this attack. We are lucky the bomb didn’t go off. The only thing that foiled this attack was the fact that this guy was terrible at making bombs. Just like the Xmas day flier who’s underwear started on fire instead of blowing up the plane.

“A muslim street vendor alerted the police.”

That can’t be true, after all, Muslims, secret* or not, are out to destroy the country. Heaven forbid we have Muslim CITIZENS who aren’t out to destroy us all.

Actually, I do believe the point could have been made without the sulking, lurking “criminal element” in the foreground, of any race or make.

The fact that he did specify the “one of those people” du jour added just a bit of an element of the racial profiling charges, but it is still ambiguous as to whether the cop is the racist, or if racial profiling is the obvious solution.

This is the triumph of hatred. One side claims the other side wants blue marbles. The other side claims his floors are beautiful the way they are. Another side wants to wear truffles. The other wants his mama.

Truth is, as with nearly all criminal acts, someone sees something and says something to someone about it. Curious people take a look. Decide something is not quite right. Acts.

The NYPD did its job. The FBI did its job. The country did its job.

Almost ten years ago some things were missed and the outcome was different. Innumerable times since and to come outcomes will be good or bad. Shame on you who use this incident to boost the right or denigrate the left. The fact is that neither right or left had anything at all to do with it. Simple, everyday folks seeing something not quite right had everything to do with it.

Although I don’t live there, thanks, NYPD.

Quit with the complaining that everything these days is racial profiling. Quit with being PC. In order to as not offend anyone, we’ve become so PC that it’s clouded our judgment and tied our hands from acting on the truth. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck…

Let us hope the “street vendor” represents a change from the New Yorkers who ignored a woman’s screams for help as she was murdered- a situation that could happen in most large, or even “medium-size” U.S. cities where nobody wants to “get involved”.

People CAN be alert. People CAN become involved. People do NOT NEED TO BE PARANOID!

With 30,000+ gun deaths, and over 40,000 highway deaths annually, maybe alertness includes paying enough attention to ALL criminal activities, and not just the “one of the week” the press locks into???

SpicyNacho: You are right! We were very lucky the bomber was incompetent. This easily could have been very bad.

Wildcard24365: I’ll accept your critique. Maybe the cartoon could have been done without any hint of racial profiling. But I will stand my ground and re-assert that this was not the intent. The intent was to bring much-needed attention to the defenders, not the offenders.

Thanks, legacyshooter and dtroutma for reminding everyone that we all need to be vigilant and speak up when things don’t seem right. Don’t be a marshmallow and let “someone else” do it. Defend your family and community. That is more than your right; it is your obligation.

The NYPD / FBI did a hell of a job! But it does help when the Dufus leaves a trail a blind hound could follow - house keys and get-a-way car keys in the SUV, VIN, Facebook, email and phone records, bomb making supplies at home, etc.

@Ken Warren: “The GOP will turn this into an attack on Obama, and deep in their hearts will be sad that no one was killed.”

I agree so far as Talk Radio is concerned - I hope not representative of the general GOP population. The Limbaughs and Hannetys make millions with their one trick pony show: ie. Obama / Democrats / Liberals = evil socialists. The more blood and guts on the street the easier to fill a three hour time slot.

What if we took out a bit of overgeneralization ant put in more individual responsability in this?

There are one billion muslims in the world, yet one sixth of it is not a smouldering crater. I’ve known muslim students from Tunisia at MonctonU. They’re educated and brilliant, they don’t diserve the reputation bomber nuts give them. They even feel some shame for 9/11. I even had some differences with them, and yet believe it or not, I’m still alive.

Yes, the Quran has violent pages. So do the Bible and the Torah (the Pentateuch is insanely focused on the “superiority” of one race, the race of Abraham, over all others). Most people don’t say these pages aren’t part of their Holy Book, they read them, but they understand very well that this is 2010 and that unless you are not threatened yourself by enemies (both Muhammad and the Israelites were), there no reason, ever, to blow up someone.

That’s what we call common sense.

In short, blaming all violence on the Quran is like blaming violence on movies, video games and Marilyn Manson. If people are too dumb to use their heads while listening to it, it’s their bad.

Look at all the violence done in the name of God and Christ. The Crusades, the inquisitions, the subjugation of South America. Killing and repression of natives in the “Wild West” during the push westward, Manifest Destiny. There was a time where the Pope himself issued death warrants when leaders and the influential didn’t bend to his will. More recently, you see “Christians” forming militias and arming themselves to the teeth. Some of them, like the Hutare in the Midwest, actually planning to attack the government. They indoctrinate their children with messages of suspicion, separatism, and “survival at all costs”. Mosses led the Israelites to “their” homeland, slaughtered the existing inhabitants, and took their land because his god allegedly commanded him to.

Fanatics are fanatics no matter what religion, if any, they hold to be true. Anyone can read their chosen book of faith and interpret it to justify their views. The difference is the fanatics in the Muslim faith are highly incited because of the actions in their homeland.

WarBush, that was riveting, thoughtful, and you have proven to me that politics is the art of making the inevitable appear as the outcome of wise human choice, in this case: a two case Harvard Ivy League descendant of Daley with ne’er 19 months of Senatorial experience becomes President, you should sport a smelly t-shirt on the stump, my friend, you already have the slob part down-pat.
