Will someone please tell me where in the constitution that says that we are guaranteed health care, welfare, unemployment. it is not there. Our founding fathers realized what total government control can do. That is why they left their homelands for the freedom of the usa. We need less government intervention. Why should people go find work at any pay rate when the government will pay you more to stay unemployed and reliant on them.

Actually, Pete, thanks to Bush and those Reaganomics folks, one needs to earn three times what he can afford in the U.S. to live like the U.s.– Housing increased roughly 10-15% annually during the Bush years- salaries went up,well, actually didn’t, unless you were a CEO or “financial wizard” that ran us in the toilet.

I’m married to a Brit and have worked for over 7 years of my life in Germany, and it’s the other way around. Poor Brits and Germans all have access to health care, much better public transportation than we have here, and much more affordable higher education than in the U.S.

The 14th Amendment has nothing to do with what Oakwood complained about - the Interstate Commerce Clause has been so abused to expand the reach of the Federal Government.

peter, I work in Europe, and have many colleagues there. The EU is rapidly approaching parity with the US. As for how people live, haven’t seen that it is anything like the ludicrous comparison you make, without benefit of facts.
Americans spend a far higher percentage of their earnings on healthcare than Europeans, and have poorer access to many other things that people consider part of a good lifestyle. We may have a higher percentage of our salaries, but increasingly we are having to spend individually – and at a premium – to make up for a failing infrastructure and government. So we are taxed less, but spend more.

I’m American, married to a German, and lived for 20 years in Germany. Our near poverty class live in “near slums” while there are really no slums in Germany. And everyone has access to high quality health care with no fear of going bankrupt due to catastrophic illnesses. Public transportation is excellent, and public schools are safe and good. Not so with much of the same class of people in the United States.

Gosh, oakwood13, you’re right! And look at all of the other “rights” we enjoy that aren’t in the Constitution:
The right to privacy.
The right to travel between states.
The right to be considered innocent unless proven guilty.
And various other rights too numerous to list.
How much better our country would be if we accepted your interpretation instead of that of the Supreme Court.
