I’ve never seen anything as impressive as the stampede to war in 2002-2003. Everyone, everywhere was all “Rah! Rah! Rah!” to attack Iraq. Anyone who thought it was a bad idea was shouted down. Even today, if I say anything like, “I was right to oppose the war,” people question my patriotism.

Yeah, I remember editorial cartoons from that time tacked up on company bulletin boards of the American Eagle sharpening its talons, and Uncle Sam rolling up his sleeves in response to the terrorists’ challenge. And remember Freedom Fries and Freedom Toast? How dare the French hesitate to follow us?.Talk, talk, talk. I don’t watch the political talk shows as much. Now that the commentators are my age or younger I see them for what they usually are — political egotists flexing their verbal muscles at each other. Reminds me of dominance displays in lizards and birds.

“Remember when there was a draft? And then a draft lottery? And then “I support our troops.”? And then we didn’t?”I remember all the yellow ribbon shaped magnets on the backs of cars and SUVs that said “Support Our Troops”. Never did learn how that actually did any thing other than be a cash cow for the magnate manufacturers.
