I forget where I took him, but on the way I told him that I know a man who might put him to work in one of his two businesses. I told him I’d write the the name and phone number down and give it to him when we stopped. But when we stopped, he got out, whipped out a huge roll of cash, peeled off more than enough for the fare, and took off while I was still telling him about the man.
Only a centralized wealth system in which all goods and services are controlled by a just and fair authority, providing for each according to their needs and taking all that is in excess of their needs from all others can be considered as compassionate and righteous. Only when everybody but the ruling party is suffering poverty and deprivation can true equality be known. And then we’ll get back to every man for himself, scrambling for the much smaller crumbs not swept up by Central Authority.

Our local newspaper partnered with a shelter & now they sell you papers from the corner of different intersections & the off-ramps to what is our version of an interstate. The paper costs 75 cents in the machines. I guess people give them a dollar & they keep the change. I’m not really sure how it works. I get mine delivered, so I’ve never interacted with them. I wouldn’t buy any from one of the guys no matter what. He is always smoking while holding up the paper. I’m one of those irritating people who is sensitive to smoke. I’ve never understood why a person would waste any of their money on such a product instead of getting real food. One of the reasons I grew up in hospitals was my mother’s 4-pack a day habit. She quit cold-turkey after her lungs started bleeding. She’d smoked for 39 years. She had started at 13! in the 50s. If she hadn’t quit she would not be here today. As it is she still wound up having to use oxygen because of all the damage that couldn’t heal. At 12 during one of my numerous trips to the E.R. they told mom that I had the lungs of a 40 year old smoker!!! That was all from second hand smoke. I never tried the stuff. At 17 when I tried pot for the first time (out of 9 times total) my friends said you do it just like a cig. They fell out laughing because they had to teach me HOW to inhale!
You guys are missing the Joke…………..its not about pan handlers at all, its about the Very Rich and the putative “trickle down” effect. They are doing what the guy on the right is doing……taking a bigger share of the national economy and saying they will create jobs with that greater share.

Letter to the editor in our local paper told how a person saw a panhandler, then later in the day saw him leaving a grocery store with four full grocery bags. Out of curiosity he followed him, and the man walked a few blocks and went into a really nice home. There is a store we shop at regularly, the same woman panhandles there. She’s been doing it so long she’s not a “young” woman any more. But she’s still there, like it’s her job.
There’s a photo “out there” of two panhandlers sitting in front of a doughnut shop that has a “Help Wanted” sign in the window. Funny, yes, but when you think on it, the shop wants someone with clean clothes and a recent shower, who will show up reliably: things a homeless person can’t necessarily handle over a long term..My wife works retail, and is making more than minimum wage here in CT, but her income (after healthcare) would just about cover rent for a 1BR. And she’s the last of the full-timers: they only hire part-timers now, and so even less income. That’s the genesis of the $15/hr movement: it isn’t right that someone should have a job and still be unable to make ends meet. I’m willing to pay an extra quarter for a burger to support that.

Yes, some do. There was a corner near where I worked that had a car drop a “panhandler” off at an intersection near us. It appeared the car had 2 other “panhandlers” in it. The panhandler near me would disappear on (I assume) breaks. at the end of the day after rush hour, the car would come back from the direction in which it left and pick him up. I suppose that is circumstantial evidence…
