And, remember, if we had lost the War of 1812, which we did, technically, all things considered….We’d all be speaking English now….

Went to a family reunion in Montreal…..My first thought as I got out of the car downtown and looked around, was, "Damn, look at all the French chicks.!…..

Maybe I don’t know enough about modern Canadians, but they were kind to Americans during 9/11 and have been generally polite. I believe there is a much higher opinion of Canadians then another neighbor who has desecrated our flag and flown their’s, and recently seen in military outfits and carrying weapons on American property. At the moment Canada is in good standing with me.

@GreyceSo it looks like you chose up sides with the expansionist imperialist you liked best, huh? Not the bad ol’ Yanks. Now, help us all to understand why the fledgling US was supposed to just sit around and wait for the Brits to stop impressing American merchant sailors and inciting Indian tribes in US territory? Oh, I forgot the Canadian commandment: Thou shalt not protect thine on interests, but should instead just wait fore the Queen to ride to the rescue.Just sayin’, too.

I just read a terrifying opinion piece in yesterday’s newspaper. After explaining at length why modern warfare is never economically justified, the author explained why it still happens:

During a war, the popularity of the invading country’s leader invariably soars.

That is why an idiot like George Dubya won re-election after invading an innocent country like Iraq while Obama is condemned for not repeating the same mistake.

One of the crucial events of the War of 1812 (1812-1814) was the Battle of New Orleans, fought in early 1815, several months after the Treaty of Ghent formally ended the war. (No cell phones or internet to spread the news). The good news — it lead to a nifty song.

@Greyce-Since Varnes went to a family reunion in Montreal, I would conclude that part of the Varnes family is Canadian. And I’m sure that is true for lots of US citizens, many of whom can trace relatives back to the original colonial days. The US Canadian relationship is one of the better ones. Let’s keep it that way; no need to excavate historic misadventures by yesterday’s leaders….

    @ Varnes

US history books tell us how the Britishburned Washington in a fit of gratuitous nastiness. They conveniently fail to mention – you have to read Canadian history, or British – was not at all gratuitous, but retaliation for our lot having burnt York (nowToronto).

My people have been here since the late 1800’s for sure……as for the big question though…..when will Obama have this land declared "The United States of Illegals?….answer is "Not sure because he is trying so hard to have that word banned as “racist”.

This is the anniversary of the Battle of Mackinac Island in 1814….Which we lost spectacularly, I may add, in a blundering, yet surprisingly idiotic manor….But that song about the Battle Of New Orleans is a gift from God in my opinion…..
