Excellent assessment, Michael.I would only add that the US leads best when it leads by positive example. When our democracy was an example of inventiveness, education, enlightenment, material wealth in the middle class and a ‘poverty class’ that was still better off than most of the third world, other countries wanted to be like us, they wanted to emulate us. They were willing to set aside our wrongdoings as anomalies of what was generally a good people. Our contractors did not represent us well in Afghanistan and Iraq and I fear they consider us more of a disease to be purged than an example to follow. It will be sad for very many Afghanis when we leave, but from having to go through Pakistan to supply our troops, and to sometimes attack our enemies, to having to be concerned that our allies will shoot us, it is a waste of life, money, and time for us to remain there.Respectfully,C.

Had that problem with ARVN also, may not be a “new” thing where they don’t really want us?

Hmmm, no one responded to identify our mission in Afghanistan….
But we definitely need to stay there until it’s complete.
