I agree. Brick and mortar schools are dying. Books in college alone are a massive ripoff (says the father with an MS in mathematics and actuarial science who put 2 kids through college). I agree that some things require labs. For those alone a building is necessary – as of right now, anyhow. But lectures are best watched and assimilated online. Why do we need new books every class? Has geometry changed since Euclid? Has inorganic chemistry changed that much since the 1930s? Some parochial schools don’t buy texts, they use the same copied lesson plans the teachers themselves wrote 40 or more years ago in many cases. And parochial schools kick public school butt. The teachers know their course solid as they have taught that course every year since the current children’s grandsires and granddames were in the same class. If teaching geometry a certain way works, DON’T FOOL WITH IT until it stops working. I can take a geometry or algebra or calculus text from 1930, teach kids out of it today and still wipe the floor with a public school. I looked at my own father’s schoolbooks from the thirties and they are all still relevant today with the exception of biology (the DNA revolution) and of course the national names and boundaries have changed in geography. We have to find ways to better educate our children or we will lose the only important race there is. The race to become the best educated nation on earth which will determine the history of the world henceforth. Take education away from professors of education. Have math majors teach math and English lit majors teach literature. You wouldn’t want a professor of education teaching your surgeon would you? Surgeons teach surgeons. Mathematicians teach math, engineers teach engineering, computer geeks teach computers.
