Maybe there is no sale and the whole thing is a test to see if Gene would tell his wife or not. And, IMO, he failed. You never ever keep a secret from your spouse, no matter what it is and no matter who told you to keep it secret. (Not counting classified documents, of course.)

Yes, of course… the real issue is that Gene should not have talked about Gus’s business and his plans with anyone…. because that is what Gus asked (at least in terms of MaryLou). When people are told something in confidence, they should evaluate VERY CAREFULLY if they should tell the information to anyone else (99+% of the time, the answer is NO) and if they do tell, are the people they will tell at least 99+% likely to keep it to themselves (usually not, so it is best to not tell).

Or maybe Gus is in cahoots with Gene to sell/give/pass the restaurant to Gene & Mary Lou? And that this is a diversion to keep the “big surprise”?
