When Eldest Daughter was little – 4-ish – she liked McHale’s Navy. One day, she dropped something, and exclaimed, “Oy, vey!”. I cocked an eye brow at her, and she smiled. “It’s an old Japanese expression.”

Copied from the SETI web site

If an extraterrestrial civilization has a SETI project similar to our own, could they detect signals from Earth?

In general, no. Most earthly transmissions are too weak to be found by equipment similar to ours at the distance of even the nearest star. But there are some important exceptions. High-powered radars and the Arecibo broadcast of 1974 (which lasted for only three minutes) could be detected at distances of tens to hundreds of light-years with a setup similar to our best SETI experiments.

And why is Arlo watching that show in the first place? 800 channels and there’s nothing else to watch? I can’t think of a more compelling reason to get rid of the satellite or cable subscription

:-)* Nothing worth doing is easy. Many of the SF stories about first contact involve our bumping into ETs while exploring out there. We need to saddle up and travel. :-)

I just we will not know for sure just how far our radio signals really go in to space until we get out there. Then we can try and pick up our own transmissions from the past. But it seems that can get as far out as 25 light years.http://www.rimmell.com/bbc/news.htm

But what if the solution to our problems is off-planet?.If most wars are caused by shortages and those shortages can be completely eliminated with solar power satellites, orbital robotic manufacturing and lunar and asteroid and comet materials extraction, the refusal to innovate could be creating the very problems..That would allow cleaning up the planet by moving our messes elsewhere..It could also provide living places for nutjobs who can’t get along with others and outsiders..We will need much better elevation and drive systems first..Perhaps alien civilizations could suggest improvements. (Assuming they aren’t on their way here to kidnap Dick Van Dyke, of course.)
