Evolution of pop culture scapegoats. The Columbine Massacre was blamed on "dark metal" bands like Marilyn Manson. (Woman: Never mind that we didn't listen to him.) Now 2 girls, age 12, are accused of trying to murder a classmate to appease Slender Man, an internet meme. In 15 years, our scapegoats have gone from the invented stage personae of rock musicians to completely fictional art characters with crowdsources backstories. (Woman: What?) (Man: Huh?) If we can't understand our crazies' inspiration, what are our political hacks to do? (Woman: We need fantasy control!) (Man: %#@ stupid crowd!)

We’ve come quite a long way scapegoatting.
I remember when it was all the rage to blame Dungeon and Dragons as a gateway to murderous satanic rituals.

Harris and Klebold took up with the “trench coat” gang that had operated in Columbine for quite some time before they went nuts. My niece and nephews all graduated from Columbine before the killings occurred.
