I visited LA in the 1970s. I visited last month. The Clean Air Act (and California’s even more strict emissions rules) have worked really well. Government regulation also fixed acid rain. The Northeast, with its cap and trade on carbon, has done better economically than the rest of the nation without one. More to the point, as the cartoon points out, not one of the complaints industry has made about how regulation will destroy industry has EVER come true. Look at their claims, but do so with healthy skepticism. Seatbelts didn’t shut down the auto industry, nor did the Clean Air Act. Obama’s regulations are not ideal (for that we need congress, which has pledged to do nothing), but they will work, they’ll spread internationally, and they will actually help the economy.
Just came forward with the fact that the Las Vegas shooter (m) who killed two ARMED police, was kicked off the “Bundy ranch” because he had a criminal background. So, where did he and his partner get guns? Yes, laws need enforcing, but they also need some remaining loopholes changed, like private sales and shows.
What the cartoonist will not acknowledge, of course, is that there have been costs to our environmental laws – in some cases worth the benefit that the laws provided, but in many other instances out of proportion to what little good, if any, they have achieved. As our industrial capacity continues to decrease and the numbers of jobless continues to rise it is good to remember that the naysayers of yesterday often had a point.
It’s interesting that you bring up DDT, which If used responsibly can effectively control dangerous pests without harming people or the environment. Millions of people have died in Africa who might have been saved by careful use of this pesticide.
Hmm, just a note, all the folks killed in Vegas were armed, the two lunatics, the two cops, AND the guy at WalMart who tried to stop it and pulled his gun for which he had a CCP. Come on LaPIerre, tell us again how good guys with guns always stop bad guys with guns?
HE’S DEAD!! The citizen with a gun was the ONLY DEAD ONE! Go in a corner and figure that one out. BTW, the chick offed her husband and herself because the cops actually WERE functional, unlike La Pierre’s brain, or his followers’ (suckers).

Big or small, every special-interst group has staked out its territory, and will not tolerate anyone infringing upon their “rights”!

Used responsibly, DDT’s impact on birds is minimal.
