I think the point here is that we have done a lot to reduce our carbon footprint in the past 20 years. We can put out zero carbon and it still won’t charge China and India’s reliance on fossil fuels and their pumping of CO2 into the air. While it may be disgustingly expensive and inefficient for us to transition to green energy, it can be done, though the debt bomb would be massive. China and India are not in the same position, so they will still keep pumping CO2 into the atmosphere. So committing economic seppaku by forcing green energy on the US will not stop the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere.
China is already doing more to use alternative energy, and yes, clean up the product from all those new coal plants their growth is demanding, than we are. That’s the reason for the new standard, and the fact it’s still not all that “tough on the industry” to accomplish in the time frame they’re given.

After American actions of the last 15 years, I don’t think many nations want to follow our lead anymore.
