I was once traveling with a group through Kansas when we were pulled over by a trooper. He said to the driver, “Sir, I know it’s monotonous scenery, but you still have to drive the speed limit.”

Interstate 5 in California from about Lebec to Stockton. 267 miles (429 km) of the most desolate lack of scenery on the West Coast: the Carrizo Plain. At least deserts have interesting features. I-5 bypasses towns, cities, and anything remotely interesting for this entire distance. Definitely the inspiration for Sammy Hagar’s song “I Can’t Drive 55”.

A friend once described Kansas as “miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles”.

North Texas east to west…and it never ends. But my least favorite state to drive across is Nevada. “I know why they legalized sin in Nevada…that was the only way they could get people to go there.”

It can’t be I-10 through Texas – that’s 800+ uninteresting miles. Eastern Colorado? It’s less than 500 miles, but sure feels like a lot more than 500. A LOT more boring than Nebraska. (Not only was the road that I took flat and featureless, but it was slightly below the grade of the adjacent land, so you couldn’t even see so much as a farm house or barn. Oy!)
