In the 70’s I did exactly that with black top below the two story monkey bar structure. Sand or wood chips were much better (and the cats loved the sand) alternative. Today with safety in mind they put down dark blue rubber pads that get up to about 135 degrees on a sunny day. I’m not sure which is worse, a concussion or 3rd degree burns. Toddlers are burning the bottoms of their feet.

our playground has small gravel below the swings and the play structure. Never hot, soft to land in and cats don’t much like it. The city combs it every morning to get left over Hot wheels, Barbie shoes, candy papers etc…

Was swinging from bar to bar (was about 8), missed the next bar and landed *whoom" flat on my back onto the hard packed earth below. Drove the air from my lungs.. Never went on the monkey bars again.
