Sunday’s tornado in Little Rock came very close to a dear friend’s house, luckily, it missed. Having seen a number of these events, I don’t care to live in “Tornado Alley” (Branson also got hit a little while ago, just days after we’d been there.), “suffering” snow in winter, or even an occasional earthquake, is a lot easier to accept.

For me, in one of the all-time episodes of bad timing, on May 24, 2011 I drove the Gypsy Wagon from Amarillo, TX to Oklahoma City. Near El Reno west of Oklahoma City on I40 at about 3:00pm I drove into one of the worst tornado outbreaks on record in an area noted for serious tornadoes. Vortexes all around, some in the E3 category. I got lucky and was able to get to shelter in a campground. But so far as I could reconstruct the next day, I missed being obliterated by minutes. Viewing the damage the next day, the carnage was astonishing. Six people killed, two on !40 where I had just passed. No more Tornado Alley for me in the spring.
