I have some Garfield collections, and in one comic the long gone Lyman is asked if his cats had names. His reply is “Let me see, there was cat cat cat and cat. Why give a name to something that doesn’t come when you call it.”
Not an exact quote, but it is close, the punch line is right.

A couple of years ago, I was amused when walking down a street a young boy began calling to a cat. His mother said, “That’s a cat son. He’s not going to listen to you.” So True.
