@The J.A.M The little swirl is Charlie Brown’s hair! In one comic, Shermy rubs his head as a greeting and messes up the his hair(aka the swirl) and it looked like he had angry eyebrows! :D
It was indeed unusual for our beloved Ms. Reichart to refer to “Chuck” as “Charlie Brown.” I’d guess it was a slip on Mr. Schulz’ part; after all, she was still a fairly new character at this point.
