I’m going to assume that this is referring to the SCOTUS decision yesterday which allowed the citizens of a state to ban the University (funded by them, mind you) to prevent that University and it’s Social Engineering Dean from employing racial advantages to tweak the School Demographics to look the way they want.
As the Parent of Two University Students – I was offended by what the University of Michigan did. My kids worked hard to get good grades and I would be very angry if they were denied access so that a less academically capable student (with the right pigment) could bump them.
Look, I get it, there were Jim Crow laws in the past. But that doesn’t mean my kids should have to sit on the back of the bus because Rosa Parks was asked to 40+ years ago.
The majority of voters in Michigan sent the Dean a message. He should be forced to comply and the Supreme Court agreed.
I just wish I could have been in the room when Sharpton and Jackson heard about this. It would have been fun to watch their bigoted heads explode.
There’s room to believe racial quotas aren’t fair, without being branded a bigot. (Though I have to suspect anyone who’s obsessed with the increasingly irrelevant Sharpton & Jackson, has a similar relationship with race relations, that certain moral crusaders have with sex.)Centuries of slavery & 100 years of Jim Crow are over, but I’m not ignorant enough to argue that their effects aren’t still being felt in the Black community. But the explicit racial barriers to entry into the middle class & the upper classes are pretty much gone. The problem strikes me as being more about economics than race. The difficulty that poor whites have in making gains supports that view.It’s one thing to bump an upper middle class kid, who has multiple options for getting a college education, in favor of a minority. But bumping middle class white kids, tends to feed the perception that Democrats aren’t interested in them The real divide in college education is family income. 55% of college degrees go to kids from families that make over $100,000 a year. Less than 10% of degrees go to kids from families making less than $33,000. That leaves about 35% go to kids from families that I would describe as solidly middle class.So, end the racial quotas. Use color blind economic quotas. Given that minorities are still over-represented among the poorest Americans, they will still get a greater share of benefit, without penalizing anyone on account of their skin color.Of course, anyone who thinks we need more tax increases to pay for this is probably not getting any traction. There’s a reason why these problems are referred to as ‘intractable’…
It is past time to switch from considering race and use economic factors instead. Using race assumes that all Blacks and Hispanics need help. Large numbers of both groups are doing fine without it. Who needs the help- the son of a waitress, of whatever race, or the Obama daughters?
