Allright! The search for America saga!My only knowledge of it was in a Smithsonian book about comics where Doonesbury is depicted hitchhiking in his quest, and meeting a trucker that was doing the same, or so he told him, but he was more likely just exploiting his naivety. Too bad it was a sunday strip and will not be shown here.

I hope they show this storyline in detail and not skip through it too quickly.

GT is doing new strips on Sundays. He is working on alpha house so he can’t do daily strips for now.

Here comes Joanie and then she will go to law school. They had an actual celebration for her at the actual law school mentioned in the strip.

In 1982 I hitchhiked across the U.S. with a buddy of mine. We went from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles: Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada & California. We took our time and totaled about 3,800 miles because we had all summer and we zigzagged a fair bit in Texas. One of the highlights of my life! : )

Interesting stats about Joanie on wiki. She was born in 1935? Wow. But, I guess that is how the math works out…

I’m kinda torn about this, I know it’s just a comic and it was a different era, but I just cannot imagine a mother abandonding her children to run away and live on commune.

I believe the plan is to chronologically delve into various eras of the strip. So we probably won’t get the whole road trip. But the entire archive is available on comics.com if you want to become a subscriber.

mrgeoff2u: Trudeau is working on the TV show, which was extended. I’m thinking the daily strips might not return till the show is cancelled. And I think we should all prepare ourselves for the possibility that even then, Trudeau might formally retire, or at least quit doing the dailies. That’s just the kind of guy he his. He probably wants to have, and enjoy, a real retirement.

For another way of immersing yourself in “Doonesbury”, read “Doonesbury and the Art of G.B. Trudeau”, by Brian Walker (one of Mort’s sons), in one handy volume. It also has tons of Trudeau’s other artwork, historical analysis, and so forth.

I’m not sure patterning your life after the characters in EASY RIDER is such a good idea. Try not to enrage any pickup drivers, guys.
