i really loved the early days of Doonesbury, when all the characters are introduced and begin to take shape. i used to have the entire collection, until i lost it all in Katrina. now at 64 and on a fixed income, i can’t afford to replace it. at least now i can enjoy it all over again, like i did decades ago when it all first began.

Aaah, “Reefer Madness”. How much money have we spent in trying to legislate morality? I suspect that if you add it all up [anti-drug programs, law enforcement, prisons, etc.] the country would be debt free with a large surplus.

Just to clarify, United Soviet Socialist Republics was a TOTAL misnomer. The greed of those in power consistently let to extremely bad results for the people who actually produced wealth and goods. Never was about sharing.

If there’s one thing human history should teach is that where’s there’s demand, there will be supply. The governments finally got this message about gambling and I would think that the numbers rackets are now out of business due to legal lotteries. Casinos bring in lots of tax dollars and even if the mobs are in them, they’re not mowing each other down in the streets with tommy guns ala the Untouchables. Prohibition was tried in the 20s and how’d that work out? Reality is reality. Legalize marijuana!

Sad to see how well the brainwashing has worked on all those people who have no real idea about socialism or communism, except for the propaganda they have been fed minute after minute of every day in their lives.

I’ve criticized Doonesbury in the past but the are has usually been okay. Now it’s not. It’s disappointing. This “Alpha house” thing is taking too much of his time and will not last.

By the time Trudeau gets back to doing original weekday episodes, a few other states are likely to have legalized pot. Anybody care to set up a betting pool?

Everything people don’t understand leads to communism: Weed, longhair, rock-n-roll, free speech, protesting. open mindedness. exc. Life is just easier that way.

Those things people don’t like leads to -isms:Communism – socialism – fascism – Nazi-ism – terrorism.Witness the right tripping over each other to find ever more extreme -isms to define the President. Sad and pathetic.

I think this is the storyline that got me hooked (so to speak) on Doonesbury.

But not all plots are garden plots

They were Stalin’s in the USSR, Mao’s in China, Pol Pot’s in Cambodia. This does not mean if those three did not exist, there would have never been purges.

Except you did not show the purges depended on the dictator, just named one dictator associated with a few purges.You didn’t address purges elsewhere by similar leaders of similar political structures..George Orwell thought Stalin betrayed the revolution. He never disproved the idea that revolutions draw people like Stalin to power. You are at least in good company..Social engineering does not care about individuals or freedom or even square pegs and round holes.
