BD doesn’t know the meaning of “negative”?

BD’s not into those big words. Or he thinks it’s some sort of stoner slang.

Note the deliberate difference in the fourth panel. An occasional recurring theme throughout the 40+ years of Doonesbury.Mike

The really amusing thing is that some of us actually talked like that back then – seems pretty hilarious from 40+ years later. :-)

I seem to remember that during Trudeau’s time at Yale, the football team had a quarterback named Brian Dowling. Coincidence?

Brian Dowling was BD. GT and BD are still friends. Can you dig it?;)

I’ve never seen any of these, and since I too am from that “groovy” era, there’s that little bit extra to laugh at, even if the laughter is slightly rueful.Never noticed the change in the fourth panel before. Thanks for pointing it out.

These are ancient strips, from around 1970 or ‘71. In my opinion the strip became much better after Trudeau got a few year of experience. I don’t really like these early strips, but they are interesting to show the history of the characters.

Has Gerry re-retired on us?Well, I always did dig Zonker’s Uboat ventures in Wilden pond. How did he get to crush depth in a two feet hole?

Yes Zonker. It is BD’s huddle. His tribe. …. his .huddle..These huddles were such fun. I missed them. But everyone grew up. Even in Doonesbury.

I want to know who Zonker is based on.-The real life Doonesbury is alive and well in New Haven, Ct. Or, he died in 2003 (don’t you just love Wikipedia?).-Charles A. Pillsbury is a mediator, lawyer, and community activist in New Haven, Connecticut, where he is the executive director of Community Mediation, Inc. He is the great-grandson of Charles Alfred Pillsbury, founder of the Pillsbury Company in 1872. He is also the source of the surname (and some perceived character traits) of the comic strip character Mike Doonesbury, created by Pillsbury’s college roommate, Garry Trudeau.Pillsbury was born on October 5, 1947 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He received his BA from Yale University in 1972 and his JD from Boston University School of Law in 1975.3 Pillsbury became actively involved in politics when he worked on the presidential campaign of Democrat Eugene McCarthy in 1968 in New Hampshire. This surprised some because his father, George, was a Republican state senator and was actively supporting Richard Nixon, and because his grandfather, Wheelock Whitney, Sr., had previously run against Eugene McCarthy for U.S. Senate in 1964.Pillsbury is Co-Chair along with Alison Duncan of the Green Party’s Dispute Resolution Committee.Pillsbury ran for United States Congress as a Green Party candidate in Connecticut’s 3rd congressional district in 2002. He received 9,050 votes, for 4.9% of the total vote.He died in 2003In 2010 Pillsbury challenged Democratic incumbent Rosa DeLauro in Connecticut’s 3rd congressional district. Connecticut Republican Party treasurer Jerry Labriola Jr. also ran. DeLauro was re-elected to another term.Pillsbury is married to the Rev. Allie Perry. (He has four children by his former wife, Jean Sanderson.) They live in New Haven, Connecticut.

So, he’s an heir to the Pillsbury fortune and a community organizer? Good for him!
