History repeats, this is just as insightful today as it was 43 years ago. And we haven’t learned a f@#king thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some were angry young men, self-important anti-government anarchists, and they are now angry old men, self-important anti-government anarchists. SDS then, Tea Party now.Others were folks who abhorred violence, cruelty, and injustice. They’re still around too: volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, maybe, or food banks or soup kitchens, and still championing the cause of disadvantaged and dispossessed. Usually now in a more modest and practical way.But there are many other paths that some have followed.Pacificism is a problem, in that it takes a very long view of things to defend it, perhaps one that embraces a life after death. It also tends to encourage isolationism, personal or national. Still, in some forms, I respect it highly, even if I can not agree with it.A couple centuries ago a Quaker preacher was holding forth on the virtues of pacifism. A heckler called out “I’ll adopt that way just as soon as the rest of the world does!” The Quaker responded, “So friend, thou admittest that what I advocate is the best way to live, but thou preferest to be the last to adopt that way rather than be among the first.”

@Bruno ZeigertsI believe the protesters helped end the war a little sooner. If not for them maybe we would still be fighting over there. I wish there had been protests at that same level for Iraq and A-Stan, cuz maybe those conflicts would have ended our involvement sooner.

As a libertarian punk, I sneered at Carter, but he’s shown himself not only to be our best ex-President, but in one issue after another, we’re finding out that he was right. Instead of listening, we let Reagan come in and start the huge giveaway to the rich, and we’re reduced to devastating the environment to bust up some rocks for that one last hit of fossil fuel that we just know is there — like an alcoholic ransacking his house for a bottle he thinks he hid for later.

They were bad but there is good in nearly all.Nazis in China were better than Japanese invaders.The USA did not make sure the North would win, but our actions contributed.They COULD have stopped making war, but chose not to.The South Vietnamese COULD have prepared to defend themselves, but chose not to.The USSR COULD have decided to abandon their imperialism and not arm the North with vast armaments, but chose to continue to expand.The Viet Cong COULD have realized the new masters/allies would betray them and fight their conquest, but didn’t..Nothing is inevitable even if it looks that way when looking back.

Week 2 of 1970 Doonesbury.

Looking back on this, can you believe how lame this is?

Sad to say, not a few Americans committed atrocities on a regular basis, but all we ever heard about was My Lai.

To anyone complaining that these classics strips are not in order or that some strips were skipped …. They all can’t be rerun. I personally don’t want to wait 44 years to get back to the present days. Let’s let Garry handpick some favorites and enjoy the flashbacks.
