Parrots raised with only humans (rather than other birds) are more likely to accept us as part of their bonded family. They do not do as well in breeding.

On the plus side, some species of pet parrots have life expectancies about on par with humans.

This spurred an unexpected memory. Back in first grade, we were assigned to draw and write about something we like. I wanted to describe our pet parrot, but didn’t know how to spell the word. So I asked my teacher. She exclaimed, “That’s a good one!,” seemingly delighted with my advanced vocabulary, and spelled out P-A-R-E-N-T on the chalkboard. Perplexed, but unsure how to tell her she had misunderstood me, I simply proceeded to write about my “peret.”
