Okay, who was Linus quoting when he read the book?

Linus must have incredible eyesight to see that the moon (a quarter of a million miles away) has moved almost a sixteenth of an inch further away since the last full moon. All the scientific loose ends get tied together if the moon was created some 4 billion years ago when the earth was impacted by a Mars-sized object. The five feet per century number seems a bit off because it would imply that the moon is older than the universe. Linus is sure a smart kid, though.

Hmmm…how does that jive with the Biblical creationist in Linus?

Linus was also a scientist and a philosopher. I recall one strip where Charlie Brown was telling Linus that gravity was weaker millions of years ago. Linus bounces a ball, and comments, “By golly, they’re right!”

I always loved the Sunday “Peanuts” with the clever first panel. Today’s with Snoopy using the moon like his doghouse is a true classic!

I’ll just point out that the moon’s orbit is rather elliptical, and it can indeed appear to be farther away on some nights than others…

“I Wish I Was 18 Again”; because it would be the mid 60s and life was much simpler then…

So since the beginning of the Peanuts strips in the 1950’s, the moon has moved away over 2.5 feet.

And we just happen to live at the time when sun and moon appear as the same size.
