Cartoon physics are at work here, obviously. No matter how small and slight they are, they have more than enough leverage to lift the rope in between them and pull it taut. ;)

Even in documentaries such as war footage. A plane crashes and you hear the explosion instantly even though the crash site is 2 miles away. Conclusion: sound travels at 300,000 km/sec.
