You’d be better off with a Fine Arts degree than one in Women’s Studies or Ethnic Studies… A degree in pre-historic trans-siberian literature would be worth more…

I am so discouraged about the state of “higher education” in the U.S., looking at all the adolescent, entitled, clueless people with paper and nothing else, all I can think of is the scene in “The Sting” where Robert Redford’s character, a small time grifter, is directed to Paul Newman’s seasoned pro con man for help in exacting vengeance for a friend murdered by the mob. Redford arrives to find the pro hung over, sleeping in his bathtub. Waking him with a cold shower, Redford laconically observes, “Luther said you could teach me. I already know how to drink.” I’m not sure, unless you’re getting a degree in the sciences, what colleges are conveying to young people today. From what I can see, they go to college already knowing how to drink, and many coming out not knowing much else.

Actually, the ones in hard sciences like physics or chemistry, mathematics, business, engineering, and that sort of thing are intelligent, motivated, and focused. It is mostly the herd of liberal arts majors taking some fluff degree or looking for their “Mrs. degree” that are paying to learn how to be stupid..I know when I was in college that on occasion I had to take or took some course as just filler for GI Bill money that was filled with liberal arts and fine arts majors. I was stunned by how vapid and incompetent they were. Simple problem solving stumped them. They were barely able to do any algebra and some were even incapable of doing fractions. It was really sad.

Vladimir Nabokov is a great writer, and his works are sophisticated and cryptic. I read LOLITA for a school course and was shown many literary intricacies that I enjoyed in the novel, and re-read it every few years. However, what with pedophilia scandals and international sex slavery so much in the news these days I really can’t make myself read it anymore.

Actually, John Lennon even repudiated his song “You Better Run,” because of its abuse themes. Some people learn.
