I sympathize with Caulfield; it always loses something when you have a explain a pun. While on a fall walk while stationed in Germany, we passed a young women stamping around in a basket of raked leaves, trying to compress them to make room for more. My wife said, “looks like she’s making wine.” I replied, “maybe it’s Liebfraumulch.” .I thought the bilingual pun was cute, but boy did it lose out when I had to explain it.

A 3rd grader using “pretentious” seems pretentious… or at least, hard to believe.
