People kept saying “one or the other”….

But, it’s more like both …. – And people kept saying Bernice was “guilted” or "coerced"…

But it’s more like neither …… – And people thought Ms. Phelps would talk her out of one thing and into another… but as usual, the “Accidental Counselor” helped her to realize that she could have the mind to not have to choose one over the other….

I still think the story-line should be that Leslie Knox (after many turn downs by others) will invite Bernice to the Prom. Major contradiction of personalities to play out !!.Bernice will at first refuse, even find his words insulting. But she will see acceptance as the epitome of NOT being sensible, she will accept..Bernice’s friends will violently oppose this. She will enjoy feeling reckless..She will make a deal with Les — no nonsense. He will keep it, more or less. Ox, always in the shadows, will be a guarantee..Ox thinks he is Tiff’s date, but in reality he seems only her bouncer. Who is Tiff going with?

One of my daughters went to prom with a group of girls she was friends with, and only a couple had dates. They went to have fun. The next year she went with a date, but said it was more fun with her group of friends the year before. It’s pretty common for girls to go without dates, and just have fun.

That would defeat Delta’s whole reason for choosing Prom Night to feed the needy. It is imperative that she seem noble by doing something “worthwhile” instead of something “fun”. Delta’s best hope to achieve sainthood is now to plan on feeding another needy family, right after the first one. Keep feeding needy families all night until the Prom is over, Delta!

Wow. Firstly this is a COMIC STRIP. Secondly—-maybe our communities would be in a little better shape if people who blog to this stuff showed a bit more interest in reality. I am up at 6am on a Saturday to go and volunteer with a group of people. It isn’t that big of a deal; lots of people do it but it has more realism than some of you who apparently think these drawn people are real.

It’s not just that Delta doesn’t want to go to the Prom. Delta actively wants not to go to the Prom. Not going is really important to her, so she shouldn’t. Get a date with a guy, Bernice, and give Delta her big chance to feel smug and self-satisfied by not attending.

Attention Leviticus. To answer your questions from a few days ago with regard to Greg’s lead time. Today, March 1, I downloaded black and white Luann strips dated Monday 3/24 to Saturday 3/29. That’s three weeks from his final art to publication. Colorists must get the final work back to Universal a week before final release with few exceptions. ======Greg is very methodical about staying well ahead of schedule so it’s a good bet he’s done writing a couple weeks before the strips are in final art form. Remember, he still has Sunday work and he takes those right through to color himself. So the often discussed reader feedback loop is quite a long one. Another thing, the online comic strip distribution experience is still relatively new for old pros like Greg who were mailing in paper-based art not too long ago. Strippers like him came up working in isolation from their fans save for letters, events like book signings, comic fests, etc. While interested in knowing what his fans think, Luann springs from within him and not from external opinions and suggestions. Adding his daughter, Karen, to the creative mix did not mean he handed off steering the ship.

I should have been more specific. I was referring to his direct involvement with the online fan base. That still is a new addition, i.e. more work to do, compared to the old ways when his work routine was formed. It’s a relentless deadline driven job and that is why most cartoonists don’t color their dailies. It’s an added chore with no return in pay.

I don’t recall either of them feeding the homeless. So long as she doesn’t go dressed like that or make her self a target as a clueless naive, but kind. On that note, I just realized how bad this can turn out. How much bigger of a BULLEYE TARGET do you need than a couple of girls all by themselves handing out food/drink on the street in the slums?

That could be another story arc.

“I presume the needy and the hungry eat every day (or would prefer to. For the ‘merely’ disadvantaged, food stamps/ welfare/ food banks serve outside of or in conjunction with social services”^Not all people fall into the so-called “food stamp” category. Many are denied this for “making too much to qualify”. -The truly hungry are not always the homeless… I live in a general metro area where the large urban metro city has a sizable homeless population who go to soup kitchens, but there are also people who through various circumstances also fall onto hard times. I’m not sure of where you live, but I can assure you, the need for help does not ask for a name or social status…. – We even have Public Service Announcements, and various other programs that also show this to be true. And where people fall through the cracks, I’ve seen firsthand how people (friends and family and community) pull together and have offered assistance in time of need… some for the short term, some a little longer…. but in the end, it’s not just some “neat little problem limited to a select few or a small group of people”….

There are also programs such as “Energy Assistance” and “The Fuel Fund” locally, as well as other programs for families with “incomes too low to ‘survive’ on, too high to be deemed ‘1st priority’”. So many people either go on waiting lists or have to turn to other places, some of which are also run by local/state government, and those that are private are put under various guidelines that actually only equal the same outcome as the rejection from the government agencies that referred the people in the first place .

And even then, the programs rely on community raised donations and are actually only allotted/allocated a certain amount each year to assist. When no funds are available, it’s on to the next place, or as I mentioned before, the waiting list. In the meantime, guess what happens… they have to choose between bills paid, food, medical care, or clothes for school. This is why a family might go hungry. If something happens and their income is suddenly (or even drastically) reduced through a hurricane or tornado ravaging their source of income (job or business flow) or perhaps a loved one’s medical bills drain a family’s finances or some other occurrence, a family can undergo this hardship and there’s not always a ‘time limit’ on how long it goes…..

I suspect Delta would enjoy not going to the Prom more than she would enjoy going to it. Not going will let her feel good about herself. Although feeding the family is important to her, it is better if it’s an alternative to the Prom, instead of something she does before the Prom. Missing the Prom is what’s most important to Delta, not doing some good deed in addition to attending the Prom.

Now, I gotcha! – Well, perhaps it’s just in the perception. There are people we may know of personally, and though we can say “they can go to this place and that, for the one night”, nothing is like the personal touch, to warm the heart as well as the stomach for that time… – Think of it this way; Maybe as Delta decided that she didn’t feel comfortable going, then her second choice would be to do what she enjoys, in her case, stuff like this. Instead of that family going to benefit from “strangers”, maybe she felt is was more personable for them to feel comfortable in a more "intimate’ environment…. – So, in actuality, her “passion” for this would be the equivalent of a teen who was a musician who, instead of going to the dance would just go and do what he/she loves, something music related. Something that involves their passion, as their second choice. Or for someone who is into cooking, decides they didn’t want to go, and just decides to bake or something. – And too, no matter how much money is given, there still needs to be bodies to help…. so if there was to be a “soup kitchen” that they went to, then, there again would be her “passion”…

I think, too, what people may have trouble with, when it comes to these two (and especially Delta) is that there are those who have fun, but also see things from a different perspective. Sometimes, others won’t believe when someone like Delta says and does as she does, because they just don’t “see” things the same way as her. – They always say “you’d have to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes to understand them”, but even then , we don’t bleed, feel, see, think or express ourselves, nor have inner feelings or values in exactly the same way.-I think that this is part of what today’s strip is saying, that we must learn to make room for others who don’t think of an event in the same way as us, or hold certain ‘rites of passage’ in the same esteem….. and at the same time, to learn how to treat others in a dignified, respectful way, even when their ways of thinking and doing are not the same as ours, regardless of which side you’re on….

Two pollible scenarios. (1) Luann puts out the word that Berneice and Delta are going to the Prom together – suddenly several guys are trying to ask Berneice or Delta to the Prom. (2) Rosa is going to Peru and Gunther made up his mind not to. They break up. Gunther asks Berneice or Delta to the Prom.

The “needy family” could very well be just that—a family. I keep feeling that the best way to “feed” them would be to take them grocery shopping so they can pick out their own food—stock up the refrigerator with items they like and know how to cook.

Looks like this could end up with Bernice coming back from the prom pregnant. Another thought – do schools let kids go solo to proms? When I was in school, you could not go alone, probably to discourage fighting due to jealousy when girls/guys think they can dance with anyone if they didn’t come with a date.
