A few months back, a popular columnist – I want to say Emily Yoffe (“Dear Prudence”) – decided to conduct her own investigation into the reported on-campus rapes. After examining numerous incident reports, she noted that an alarming number took place in the wake of social events – such as parties – in which alcohol was served. Based on this, she recommended that young women avoid such situations as a means of protecting themselves. []From what I recall, she promptly got hammered by critics for daring to suggest that something as simple as “not putting oneself in danger” could contribute to a person’s safety.

It’s unlikely that any of you will believe this report, but here it is:http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/docs/sexual_assault_report_1-21-14.pdf

Typical conservatives, criticizing the president’s statistics, and presenting as evidence… no alternate data whatsoever. You BELIEVE that the president is lying, but have zero evidence. But who needs evidence? I FEEL that the climate is not changing, I FEEL that the old health care system worked fine, I FEEL that the unemployed and poor just aren’t punished enough. I FEEL that campus rapes are not a problem. I FEEL that government can’t create jobs. It’s a real shame that these idiots have such power to interfere in government.

I used to wonder if the numbers were inflated, but then I did an informal survey of women that I know, and it turned out that most of them had been victims of some kind of sexual assault (I mean something more than an unwanted sexual advance, but something including some use of force), and quite a few had been raped. Both my mother and my sister were raped. I have a friend who is one of four sisters — all four were raped by their father. A colleague at work was raised by her aunt and uncle — her uncle had her perform oral sex starting when she was about ten. And so on. Ask around, you may be surprised.
