Back when the Army still had steel helmets, not Kevlar, in basic training they told us NEVER use your helmet for cooking. It removes the temper from the steel.
IMHO, the best present I ever gave my WWII buff brother-in-law was a copy of Mauldin’s book I found at a flea market (of course, I made sure all the pages were there before I sent it).
