Calvin attempts to correlate song with joy. Note the downward arc of the result, as if he were actually plotting hypothetical joy against time. Psychological impact will be evident when joy=zero (soon). Wait – no – surely @Hobbs will have a better explanation for this :)

For my kids, it was the ‘greasy, grimy, gopher guts’ song that would get them sent outside…

@spirit1942: Note that while Calvin’s pleasure is decreasing, his parents’ pleasure is increasing. It’s the fundamental principle of Conservation of Ecstasy.

Odd that the 22 posts before this one did not mention the original song that this was a parody of. Does no one remember “On Top of Old Smokey”?

On top of old smokeyAll covered with snowI lost my true loverFrom a courtin’ too slow

On top of old smokeyI went there to weepA false hearted loverIs worse than a thief

For a thief, he will rob youAnd take what you haveBut a false hearted loverWill send you to your grave

She’ll hug you and kissAnd tell you more liesThan the cross ties on the railroadOr the stars in the skies

On top of old smokeyAll covered with snowI lost my true loverFrom a courtin’ too slow
