My nephew works 3 jobs just to make ends meet, one of which is delivering pizza on weekends, and so many times he comes home with tales of people with this sort of mentality — and even when everything in their order is perfect these types rarely tip, or if they do they give him a smug, self-important sneer with a ‘keep the change’ (usually less than a quarter) and slam the door. I’d like to take that sodding ‘crazy bread’, wrap it in tin foil and it’d be the biggest suppository they’d ever bloody well see! Double Grrrrrrr!
Now, testing for understanding, Purple, you are upset with the Pennys and people like them because they mistreat those in service to them. Yes? You see, I’m not upset at all. I’d just shoot the blighters several times in a non-fatal place! There’s a special place in hell for them.
Every once in a great while, I’ve made a comment to the effect that someone in my family….like one of my Illinois aunts or uncles…. or even my Dad…. had at some time been seen to do something Pennyish,usually involving thrift, or sometimes obtuseness.
I’ve always pointed out, though, that none of them were ever stingy or cruel, like the Pennys…merely naive, or or price-conscious.
When I see a strip like today’s, however, I want to take back every word I ever said that drew any sort of parallel between any relatives of mine, living or dead, and any Penny, Shemp or Darwin from Crustwood.
These people are unrelated to any sort of human….their closest kin are weasels and wolverines.
I used to work at a Little Caesars and loved making Crazy Bread orders. We were carry-out only (no delivery or dine-in) and people always called during a blizzard or ice storm and want delivery. Pizza Hut had already told them they didn’t have any delivery people available.
They’re the type to use coupons and tip based on what they have to pay in cash, not on the value of the meal and service..
I had a short stint as a pizza delivery person once & believe me it is one STRESSFUL job, they send u to these crazy, extremely hard to find places at night, in all kinds of weather, u can’t see, u have a time limit, the pizza is getting cold,,,,,sometimes I would pull over & just cry,,,,the last thing they need is mistreatment,,, Be kind & if u can, please tip well..they truly deserve it.
My son delivered for a while, he had to buy his own gas.Supposedly they gave him money for the distance. He drove 10 miles and got .10cents a mile from them. He was one to drive around a clay road with no house # on the mail boxes.Yes I do believe delivery guys should get at least 5.00 for every 5 miles they have to drive to find your place.
I hope the boy put the Pennys pizza in the snow to cool off. I wonder if they argue who delivers to them when the order is put out. Give it to the new guy?
Believe me, this happens! There was a day a few years ago when I made it to work in a big snow but someone who lived a lot closer didn’t make it. The next day he said he couldn’t make it in, but he ordered pizza. We all said “You tipped big right?” He didn’t tip at all! He couldn’t make it to work himself, but he expected someone to make it to his house and then didn’t tip.
There are some things that I avoid doing, partly because I am not sure how much to tip because I don’t even know prices in advance. I never order food delivery in any case because (even before this year) there are only a few places where I would like the delivered food, and they are also “carry out” only.

Joy and Burl….made for each other..Had a relative that worked for a national pizza chain. She helped her drivers out by referring second time complaining customers (aka the Pennys) to other chains or other stores of her chain. Her workers appreciated her efforts.
They say the customer is always right. If the customer has been conditioned to complain, feeling they will be getting discounts or free stuff, who can blame them. I am glad you gave them a healthy dose of reality. Fact of the matter is, the customer is always right, however…
I used to work as a supervisor on a call floor. I went against company policy and told my agents if they are subjected to foul language, go ahead and disconnect the call. I never got in trouble, and the agents on my team respected me for validating their worth as a valued member of my team..
