You seem to be laying the blame for the poor performance of the education system in America on "the left’. Is it the left that has underfunded the schools in this country, compared to many other services and industries?
I agree that vocational school is a much better choice than college for many. However, you seem to be implying that the alternative was drug use. Was that your intention? If so, what reason do you have for saying it?
As for jobs, I think it is the “job creators” sending the jobs overseas to maximize their profits that must bear a large percentage of the blame.
The comments attached to strips like this and from politicians who say that cutting benefits will urge deadbeats out into the job market disgust me completely. Yes there are those who scam the system. But I believe there are many more who, surprise surprise, don’t want to lose their homes. Don’t want to go without medical care, lose their cars or go hungry. In short, they WANT TO WORK because the foregoing is their alternative. My skills and resume are such that I have never been out of a job when I was in the market. Until I got blind-sided in an office I had just joined and found myself booted out of work. At the end of 2008. Both before and after the Office of Unemployment Security required it I was sending out resumes for every job I thought I could qualify for, within my recent experience and well outside it, from newspapers, temp agencies and the Internet. I got a few nibbles, one or two interviews, and have never worked since. Our situation has improved since and although I would like to work again I have stopped looking, feeling guilty a looking for a job that might be sole support for someone. But stop saying that unemployment benefits are the icing on someone’s angel food cake. It is ignorant, hurtful and did I say IGNORANT!

My son’s 13 years in the Navy gave him training that should provide him good employment opportunity in over 11 different job fields, from air conditioning to nuclear reactors, but he’s about to finish schooling for yet another field, where he’ll actually enjoy the work, have a selection of places he can live, NOT in big cities, and where jobs actually ARE available!
Interesting in watching the news, and other reports of how many people are unemployed, and can’t find work, who have degrees in computer sciences, like PhDs no less!! A friend who’s highly skilled in computer programming (code writing, not just data entry) is now unemployed because the corporation that took over her workplace is “downsizing”. (The reason is to cut employees, and increase the “cut” those at the top can take from the government contracts they have!)
Obviously skipcarlsen has never had to look for a job or maybe even work for a living. Who is providing him with all his wisdom? anyway.He needs to try going out and finding employment that will support a family and see how well he can do!
Right. No one SHOULD benefit from unemployment BUT the rich sure do because while they can get their product made with half the US workforce (because they use cheap overseas labor) The increase their profits and drive more people into the unemployment line. AND if you read those help wanted signs and ads you will discover that most of them are for sales jobs where one person wants to send our others to sell useless products on a commission where the employer makes most of the money. The good jobs have 30 -40 applicants for every opening. Try it and see how well you can do!
Poor, BillyOhio. I guess you are one of those who enjoyed waiting for the government to shut down because Congress was refusing to compromise on anything. At least both sides got a little of what they wanted. The poor and unemployed, however were left paying the bill so the rich could go on ripping 99% of the US population off!
An aside respecting the ACA. My niece’s husband had a stroke, lost his job and health insurance. Two months later she lost HER job and insurance. I sent him to VA (he’s NOT service connected) and he started getting his meds again (with a small copay) and back into physical therapy (sorely needed) at a VA hospital nearby, at no charge.
HE was lucky enough to be a veteran, far more people in the same “spot” are NOT and without the ACA can NOT get insurance coverage in a like situation. Just another reason we need an “improved” ACA, NOT a repeal of the whole thing.
